Skyhawks downed by Grizzlies in league home opener

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team dropped its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference home opener to a surging Adams State University squad by a 76-56 final.

Fort Lewis fell to 4-4 overall and an even 1-1 in conference play while Adams State improved to 7-3 on the year and 2-0 in the league.

The Skyhawks shot 33.3 percent (15-of-45) from the field compared to a 44.1 percent (26-of-59) mark for the Grizzlies. Fort Lewis dropped in 19 free throws at an 82.6 percent clip compared to 14 free throws for Adams State. The teams combined for 44 fouls and 52 turnovers in the physical matchup.

Sophomore Lanae Billy led the Skyhawk with 21 points, her 12th career 20-plus point contest. Junior Avery Evans and sophomore Kate Gallery followed with eight points apiece. Junior Sadie Misner contributed six points and four steals.

In the first quarter, it would be Misner who got the scoring started with a driving layup a minute into play. The Grizzlies responded by scoring on back-to-back possessions to claim a lead, but the Skyhawks stayed within striking distance midway through the quarter. Billy would give her team the lead yet against with 4:26 remaining by scoring her first three of the night, but Adams State ended the opener with three buckets to see a 15-12 lead.

Misner made it a tied score at 16-all after scoring twice to begin the second quarter, and Adams State fought back with two makes to go ahead 21-16. Billy ended the brief run with another three as the clock ticked under five minutes. The Grizzlies took control at the end of the quarter and extended the lead to 12 points before a jumper from Gallery could get Fort Lewis on the board. Gallery trimmed the lead with seven seconds to go, but a buzzer-beater from mid-court fell in favor of Adams State for a 40-2 halftime lead.

The teams traded points out of the break, but Adams State went on to extend the lead to 19 points with 5:35 to go. Another three from Billy snapped the Skyhawks scoring drought with her third three of the night. The following minutes saw offensive production from both teams, and a late Fort Lewis three sent the game into the fourth quarter with the score at 62-43.

The fourth quarter proved to be another defensive-minded venture for both sides with a combined seven points making up the opening four minutes. The Grizzlies found another three-pointer at the 3:28 mark, and freshman Natalie Guanella answered back with one of her own to make it 72-51. Senior Ember Cervantes stepped up with a corner three with just over one minute to play, and junior Samantha Wattawa ended the game at the charity stripe as time eventually expired on a 76-56 final.
