No. 20 Skyhawk set to fend off invading Cowboys, ThunderWolves in weekend series

DURANGO, Colo. – It's a two-day turnaround this week as 20th-ranked Fort Lewis looks to remain unbeaten in Whalen Gymnasium as New Mexico Highlands University and Colorado State University Pueblo come to town for a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchups on Friday and Saturday.

Veterans and First Responders and Whalen Winter Wonderland/Donation Day
On Friday, Fort Lewis will honor veterans and first responders. Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite camo items in support. Saturday's game against CSU Pueblo is tabbed as the Whalen Winter Wonderland and Donation Day. Fans are encouraged not only to dress up in their favorite holiday-themed sweaters but also to bring various gift donations for those in need this holiday season. Each gift item valued at $10 or more is worth one free admission ticket to Saturday's games.
 
Last Time Out
Fort Lewis is coming off an electric 100-80 win over U.S. Route 160 rival Adams State University (2-6, 1-1 RMAC). Five Skyhawks capped off the night in double-digits led by Junior Garbrah's 20-point, three assists, and one steal outing. Samier Kinsler finished just behind with 18 points and Malik Whitaker another 15. The Skyhawks dominated forcing 19 turnovers and grabbing a team-season-high 14 steals while also outrebounding the Grizzlies 36-to-26 and shooting 55.9 percent in the game.
 
Scouting the Cowboys
New Mexico Highlands is coming off a full week of rest after downing Chadron State College (3-4, 1-1 RMAC) to advance to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference games. The Cowboys own the sixth-highest offense (76.3) and tenth-ranked defense (71.8) in the conference while also holding opponents to the league's second-best opposing field goal percentage at 40.5.
 
Two Cowboys are averaging double-digit points per game, Kyrie Thomas (10.6) and AC Curry (10.2). The duo is aided underneath by Ezichi Kalu who ranks second in the RMAC with 9.7 rebounds per game. As a unit, NMHU is shooting 45 percent from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arc while hauling in 35.3 rebounds per game. Most notably, New Mexico Highlands downed 19th-ranked Angelo State University (5-1, 2-0 RMAC) 68-65 at the South-Central Region Crossover.
 
Scouting the ThunderWolves
The Pack heads into the week 5-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play ahead of a showdown at the Grizzlies den on Friday. CSU Pueblo is coming off its first conference win of the season 73-70 over Colorado Christian University (3-4, 0-2 RMAC).
 
Firing off clips of .436/.378/.685 the ThunderWolves average 75.4 points while holding opponents to 62.6 for the second-largest score margin (+12.8) in the league behind the Skyhawks. Four members of the Pack are averaging double figures this season led by Brevin Walter's 15.8 per game. Makiah Morris is the lead man in the post with 12.5 points and a roster-leading 6.1 rebounds per game.
 
Looking Ahead
Fort Lewis has just one final game, a conference matchup, against Westminster University (4-4, 0-2 RMAC) before the holiday break. The Skyhawks and Griffins are set for a battle of the birds on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 3:00 p.m. in Whalen Gymnasium.
