Women's basketball remains home to face New Mexico Highlands and CSU Pueblo

DURANGO, Colo. – After competing in a mid-week showdown on Tuesday, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team will remain home for a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests on Friday and Saturday inside of Whalen Gymnasium.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks saw a four-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday at the hands of Adams State University. The Skyhawks shot 33.3 percent (15-of-45) from the field compared to a 44.1 percent (26-of-59) mark for the Grizzlies. Fort Lewis dropped in 19 free throws at an 82.6 percent clip compared to 14 free throws for Adams State. The teams combined for 44 fouls and 52 turnovers in the physical matchup.

Sophomore Lanae Billy led the Skyhawk with 21 points, her 12th career 20-plus point contest. Junior Avery Evans and sophomore Kate Gallery followed with eight points apiece. Junior Sadie Misner contributed six points and four steals. Fort Lewis was missing the presence of senior Kelsey Sorenson who missed her fifth straight game with an injury, as well as juniors Sydney Bevington (injury) and Lilly Pepper (illness).

Scouting New Mexico Highlands
The Cowgirls are 3-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play following wins over Colorado Christian (74-73) and Chadron State (60-47) last week. NMHU has faced three common opponents with Fort Lewis this season, including Western New Mexico (L, 42-45), Eastern New Mexico (L, 64-70), and Northern New Mexico (W, 62-52 & L, 57-63).

NMHU is averaging 59.5 points per game with a field goal percentage of 39.0. The team owns a 68 percent clip from the free throw line. Individually, it is Juliana Aragon who leads the way by averaging 14.5 points per game. Delani Harris followed with 9.2 points per game and ranks second on the roster with 7.2 rebounds per game. Aja Scott is leading all players with 7.3 rebounds per game.

Fort Lewis leads the all-time series at 25-3 despite dropping the two most recent matchups. The Skyhawks are 13-1 at home against the Cowgirls, and this season the Cowgirls are winless on the road. In the lone meeting last year, a road contest in Las Vegas, Fort Lewis was defeated by a 78-56 final score. Sorenson led the team with 10 points and the Cowgirls saw three players reach double figures.

Scouting CSU Pueblo
The ThunderWolves are 5-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play following a split against Chadron State (W, 62-52) and Colorado Christian (L, 67-78) last week. CSU Pueblo has faced one common opponent with Fort Lewis this season in Eastern New Mexico (W, 49-37).

CSU Pueblo is averaging 64.1 points per game with a field goal percentage of 38.1. The team is averaging 14.9 free throws per game at a 75.7 percent clip. Individually, it is Alisha Little who leads the way by averaging 17.7 points per game (3rd in RMAC) to go along with 10.7 rebounds per game (2nd in RMAC) and 3.3 blocks per game (1st in RMAC). She is backed up by Landri Hudson who averages 11.9 points per game. Two additional players average nine points per game.

Fort Lewis trails the all-time series 10-15 with a 6-6 record inside of Whalen Gymnasium. Last season, the Skyhawks split the series with a road loss (46-61) and a home win (72-53). Billy recorded 23 points in the win, followed by Sorenson who dropped in 11 points.

Around the RMAC
Mines leads the conference with a 7-1 overall record, followed by Adams State (7-3) and UCCS (5-4). There are four teams with 2-0 marks in the early goings of RMAC play. In the statistical standings, Fort Lewis ranks seventh in points per game (65.3), seventh in 3-point FGs made (6.6), fifth in free throw percentage (76.9), second in scoring defense (57.8), first in steals per game (14.9), and first in offensive rebounds per game (15.8).

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis is led by senior Kelsey Sorenson who is averaging 15.7 points per game, followed by sophomore Lanae Billy who is putting up 14.3 per game. From there, five players average over five points per game. Junior Sydney Bevington leads the team with 8.7 rebounds per game—a mark that ranks seventh in the conference. Redshirt junior Lilly Pepper follows by averaging 6.2 rebounds per game and is coming off a pair of double-doubles. Billy leads the team and ranks second in the conference with a 3.4 steals per game average, and junior Sadie Misner is close behind with 2.8 per game (5th in RMAC).

Winter Wonderland and Donation Day
Saturday's game against CSU Pueblo is tabbed as the Whalen Winter Wonderland and Donation Day. Fans are encouraged not only to dress up in their favorite holiday-themed sweaters, but also to bring various gift donation for those in need this holiday season. Each gift item valued at $10 or more is worth one free admission ticket to Saturday's games.

Fort Lewis will wrap up the 2023 portion of its schedule on Saturday, December 16 with another home game, this one against Westminster University. The game is clocked for 1:00 p.m.
