Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Hayden Mangan, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

Season highs continue as No. 20 Fort Lewis picks up its third win of the week with a 97-64 rout over CSU Pueblo

DURANGO, Colo. – Whalen Gymnasium was booming Saturday night as five Skyhawks finished in double-digits led by Malik Whitaker's 23-point outing to propel No. 20 Fort Lewis (8-1, 4-0 RMAC) to an authoritative 97-64 victory over CSU Pueblo (6-4, 2-2 RMAC) in the Skyhawks third Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game in the past five days.

Fort Lewis wins its eighth-straight game and moves to 6-0 inside Whalen this season. The Skyhawks also snapped the ThunderWolves two-game hot streak and moved to 57-49 all-time against the Pack.

"I thought we played really well, played with great pace, and the defense caused a lot of havoc," Bob Pietrack commented. "They're a good team, we just happened to catch them like a boxer with an uppercut on that 35-17 run and once they were on the ropes it was hard for them the rest of the night. Anything can happen on an RMAC Saturday night is the line that coach Hofman used to tell me… now we need to simply turn the page and get ready for the single game next week."

After winning the opening tip, the Skyhawks knocked down all four of its opening shots but back-to-back treys from Brevin Walter kept the Pack within a single possession. While the ThunderWolves hung tough and Walter sunk a pair of free-throws to knot the game up at 15-15, it was the last time CSU Pueblo would get any closer than 11 points.

Fort Lewis exploded with a 35-17 run to close out the opening half including a buzzer-beat from Whitaker above the arc to send the home crowd into a frenzy. Out of the intermission, the Skyhawks showed no signs of slowing down. After extending the lead out to 27, FLC suddenly found themselves in an offensive lull for the next nine minutes that allowed CSUP to climb within 14. Unwilling to give up any more space, the Skyhawks capped off the night 13-for-16 from the floor with three treys and a pair of monstrous dunks from Obi Agbim and Brayden Carter to seal the game.

Whitaker finished his evening 8-for-11 from the field with three rebounds, five assists, three steals, and one block while finishing with a season-high 23 points, just two points shy of his career-high 25. Carter provided a thunderous 17 points, 11 of which came in a span of just over three minutes late in the second half, while also leading the roster with seven rebounds and three blocks alongside a pair of assists.

Junior Garbrah finished in double figures for his third-straight game while grabbing three rebounds, dishing out three assists, and nabbing four steals. Agbim added another 14 and Isaiah Thompson 10 more to round off the Skyhawks to finish in double digits.

Three members of the Pack finished in double figures led by Walter with 15, Makiah Morris with 14, and Armon Muldrew with another 11. CSU Pueblo shot just 30.5 percent in the contest and 25 percent from beyond the arc with 17 turnovers.
