2/20/2023 3:36:00 PM

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team opens the season tomorrow with a neutral site game versus Bates College, the first meeting between the programs in series history.

Scouting Bates College
Bates, a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), is coming off a 3-10 record in 2022 which saw the team at 1-9 in conference play. The Bobcats were 0-6 on the road and 2-4 at home.
Bates was challenged by some of the nation's top talent last season, including nine games against teams ranked in the top-25. In conference play along, the Bobcats faced eight ranked programs—two of which were in the top-five.

Bates averaged 25.2 shots per game last season while allowing 30.2 per game from the opposition. The team netted 113 goals versus 176 for their foes. The team loses its top-three goal scorers from a year ago with sophomore Trish Balser leading all returners with 11 goals in 2022. Bates lost three games last season by two or fewer goals and will look to veteran defenders to flip the score in 2023. The Bobcats return senior goalkeeper Cammie Lavoie to the mix after playing in 12 contests last season.

A History of Season Openers
The Skyhawks are 8-6 all-time in season-openers, including a 17-10 win last season over Westminster College. Caprietta Abbadessa score the first game of the season to open the game as the Skyhawks went on to score seven goals in both the second and third quarters en route to the road victory. Ellie Martinez and Autumn Rymerson each had three goals to lead all returners.

Homeward Bound
Following Tuesday's game, Fort Lewis will play in its home opener on Tuesday, March 7 against Lewis University. It will be the first ever meeting between the programs.

Lewis will play in four games prior to taking on Fort Lewis, including games in West Virginia, Maryland, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The Flyers were 4-10 last season and 2-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
