La Rose’s career night guides No. 10/12 Skyhawks to commanding win over Grizzlies

DURANGO, Colo. – Brendan La Rose scored a career-high 25 points and Brenden Boatwright supplied a double-double as the tenth-ranked Fort Lewis College men's basketball dominated the Adams State Grizzlies offensively in route to an electrifying win in Whalen Gymnasium Tuesday night.

Fort Lewis notches its 20th win of the season moving to 20-2 overall and 14-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Tonight's loss drops the Grizzlies to 4-19 overall and 2-15 in conference play.

"I felt like we didn't play our best last Friday and we really wanted to get back on track with ourselves tonight which I believe we did," head coach Bob Pietrack shared. "We were able to get a good lead early and sustain it throughout the game tonight. We've had some ups and down the last few years as a team, but it's awfully rewarding when you have a fifth-year guy like [Brendan La Rose] do not only what he did tonight for himself but doing it within the team's goals and philosophy. He's worked so hard over the years and seeing it all come to fruition is incredible, and I know there's still more left in him."

The Skyhawks ran off with a 16-0 lead to open the contest capped off by a midrange jump shot from Dunnell Stafford. Shots began to fall for Adams State, and a jump shot from Maison Adeleye had the Grizzlies within eight, 27-19.

La Rose scored 16 of his 25 points in the opening half as the offensive downpour continued and the Skyhawks hit nine of the team's 16 total threes – seventh all-time single-game for the program – to reach a 56-34 lead heading into halftime.

While shooting 60.0 percent from both the floor and beyond the three-point line in the opening half alone, Fort Lewis continued to shoot 50.0 percent from the field in the second half to hold down the Grizzlies. The Skyhawks led by as many as 35 points on multiple occasions while holding Adams State to just 44.8 percent from the floor and 26.1 percent from beyond the arc.

La Rose's 25 points led all scorers while Boatwright and JaQuaylon Mays each added 10 points, and Akuel Kot an additional 11. Boatwright notched his second double-double of the season and the fourth of his career. Mays ended with eight rebounds and nine assists to finish just shy of a triple-double.

The Grizzlies had four players finish in double-digit scoring: Kolby Walker with 16, Maison Adeleye with 13, and Isaiah Sampson and Kaleb Mitchell with 10 points each.

Celebrating Pink Out Night and honoring survivors and their families, Fort Lewis held a halftime free throw shootout presented by Alpine Bank and Mercy Regional Breast Care Center. Donating five dollars for every basket made over an eight-minute period, the Skyhawks men's and women's basketball teams were able to raise a combined total of $550 for breast cancer research.
