Skyhawks drop 19-11 game to Griffins despite Dostie's career day

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A career-high seven goals from junior Haley Dostie was not enough for the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon with a 19-11 final falling in favor of Westminster College in conference action.

Fort Lewis fell to 0-4 on the year and 0-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Westminster improved to 2-0, 2-0 RMAC.

The Skyhawks were outshot 38-22, including a 32-20 edge in shots on goal. Fort Lewis was 17-of-20 on clear attempts for the contest. The Griffins earned 20 ground balls compared to 10 for the Skyhawks.

Dostie's seven goals led all players, and the Skyhawks found goals from four additional players. Freshman Sydney Tannaci picked up her first career goal in the loss. Freshman Samantha Rodgers led the team with two caused turnovers to go along with two ground balls. Sophomore Mikki Brown also picked up two ground balls to bring her season total to six. Senior goalkeeper Averi Basso had a season-high 13 saves on a season-high 38 shots faced.

Both sides picked up saves through the first two minutes of play, but it was Westminster that broke through with the first goal of the afternoon in the third minute. The Griffins doubled the lead one minute later on a free position shot. Junior Caprietta Abbadessa sent a shot on goal in the team's following possession, but the keeper earned a save to hold Fort Lewis at zero. The Skyhawks sent a trio of shots on goal through the final minutes of the quarter, but the score held at 2-0.

Westminster wasted little time netting its third goal of the afternoon with a free position snipe one minute into play in the second quarter. Sophomore Diamond Velasco picked up her first shot of the outing with 10:54 to go, and Dostie finally broke through for the team's first goal with nine minutes on the clock. From there, the teams went blow for blow, including goals from Kaylin Vanzant and Dostie, to close out the half in an 8-3 score.

Out of the break, junior Ellie Martinez set the tone with a goal just 45 seconds into play, but the effort was echoed by the opposition for a 9-4 score. Dostie and Tannaci combined for a pair of goals midway through, but the Griffins went back-to-back to maintain a sizable lead at 12-6. In the fourth quarter, Dostie added three additional goals to her stat line, along with a goal by Kylie Moser, to end the game in a 19-11 score.

Fort Lewis (0-4, 0-2 RMAC) will have a week to prepare for a neutral site game versus Rockhurst University (4-1) on Saturday, March 18 at noon from the Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium in Pueblo.

The Skyhawks own a 5-2 all-time record against Rockhurst, dating back to a series-opening 23-1 win in 2014. Last season, Fort Lewis fell in a 19-2 decision to the Hawks.
