Women's lacrosse opens RMAC play at Colorado Mesa and Westminster

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team is jumping into Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play this Friday and Sunday with road games against Colorado Mesa University and Westminster College.

Last Time Out
Facing Lewis University in a neutral site contest on Tuesday afternoon, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team dropped an 11-7 final in the team's second game of the season. Lewis improved to 2-2 overall while Fort Lewis dropped to 0-2 to start the 2023 season.

The Skyhawks were outshot by a 27-18 margin, including a 22-15 margin in shots on goal in favor of the Flyers. The teams combined for 48 turnovers while the Skyhawks were 17-of-19 in clear attempts. Lewis earned a 16-5 advantage in draw controls.

A trio of Skyhawks recorded two goals on the afternoon. Sophomore Mikki Brown recorded a pair of goals to go along with three ground balls. Juniors Haley Dostie and Ellie Martinez each picked up two goals on five shots. Junior Caprietta Abbadessa and Martinez each came away with four ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Averi Basso played in all 60 minutes and came away with 11 saves.

Scouting Colorado Mesa University
The Mavericks have played one game this season, a 13-8 loss to No. 10 Grand Valley State University on March 3. Despite the loss, the team is ranked No. 24 in the latest version of the ILWomen/IWLCA Division II Poll. Colorado Mesa is coming off a 13-6 season in 2022 which came to an end in the RMAC Tournament Championship game with a 15-8 loss to Regis University.

Colorado Mesa is led by Kiley Davis who scored four goals in the season-opener on six shots on goal. Four players follow with one goal apiece. Goalkeeper Shannon Murphy leads the team with five ground balls to go along with seven saves in 32 shots faced. Kelsey Viger leads the way with five caused turnovers through one game to lead the conference.

The Skyhawks are 9-9 all-time against the Mavericks but have lost nine straight, dating back to the most recent win in 2015. Last season, Fort Lewis fell by a 15-4 final on the road and 17-10 in the rematch at home.

Scouting Westminster College
The Griffins open the season on Friday against CSU Pueblo with a 4:00 p.m. start from Dumke Field in Salt Lake City. The team has played in three exhibition games this season, including a recent double overtime loss to Dominican University of California (13-12). Westminster was 4-11 last season and 4-8 in conference play, narrowly missing out on the RMAC Tournament.

The team's leading scorer from last season, Eden Freiberg, returns after netting 31 goals to go along with 11 assists last season. Freiberg had five goals in both meetings against the Skyhawks last season.

Fort Lewis will play a nonconference, neutral site game against Rockhurst University on Saturday, March 18 with a noon start on the campus of CSU Pueblo.

The Skyhawks own a 5-2 all-time record against Rockhurst, dating back to a series-opening 23-1 win in 2014. Last season, Fort Lewis fell in a 19-2 decision to the Hawks.
