Women's lacrosse closes out 2023 campaign with 13-9 loss to UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end on Sunday in a 13-9 road loss to UCCS. The Skyhawks end the season with a 3-10 overall record and a 3-7 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

The loss marks the end of the careers of seniors Averi Basso, Makena Carter, and Rebecca Kiyokawa.

The Skyhawks were outshot 34-31 for the game. The teams were even at 30 ground balls apiece and totaled 29 turnovers on the day. The Mountain Lions had a 16-10 advantage in draw controls.

Junior Haley Dostie led the team with two goals and an assist. Her 45 goals this season are the most in a single season since Jessica Norby scored 47 in 2012. Freshman Valerie Garcia enjoyed a two-goal outing, the first multi-goal game of her young career. Sophomore Diamond Velasco added one goal and dished out two assists for three points.

Freshman Samantha Rodgers led the team with four ground balls to go along with one ground ball and her first career goal. Junior Ellie Martinez and Delgado followed with three ground balls apiece. Senior Makena Carter led the team with two caused turnovers. Senior Averi Basso played all 60 minutes at goal, recording 11 saves in the effort.

The Mountain Lions opened the game by going on a four-goal scoring run which carried into the final four minutes of the quarter. Senior Rebecca Kiyokawa turned the momentum with a clutch ground ball to see the Skyhawks in their attacking third. With 2:21 on the clock, it was Garcia on an assist from Tannaci who got Fort Lewis on the board.

Basso went on to record a save on the following UCCS attempt, and Fort Lewis took advantage of an opposing yellow card to go woman-up. Dostie found success with just one second remaining, netting her 44th goal of the season to make it 4-2 at the conclusion of the quarter.

UCCS set the tone early in quarter two, scoring its fifth goal of the afternoon off the opening draw to go up by three. Junior Ellie Martinez and sophomore Mikki Brown each sent shots on goal, but both attempts resulted in saves at the clock dipped under 12 minutes. Junior Nina Polk would deliver at the 10:46 mark, finding a pass from Dostie to make it a 5-3 game.

Kiyokawa won the following draw to give her team favorable field position, and Dostie made UCCS pay with her second goal of the outing off the assist from sophomore Diamond Velasco. The Skyhawks continued to roll, scoring to make it 5-5 on the free position opportunity for Vanzant. Defense took over with things knotted up, but the Mountain Lions eventually broke through with a woman-up goal to reclaim the lead.

The Mountain Lions added another, and turnovers on the Skyhawks' final two possessions of the half resulted in a 7-5 score at the half. Goals were even in the second quarter despite a 10-6 shot advantage for the home team. The Skyhawks owned a 4-3 advantage in draws and Basso came away with three saves.

Fort Lewis recorded the first shot of the second half, but a save on a free position shot maintained the 7-5 score. Rodgers was credited with a caused turnover and ground ball at the 12:16 mark, leading to a Dostie shot, but the opposing goalkeeper came away with another save. The scoreless streak continued until the eight-minute mark when Rodgers netted her first career goal to pull her team within one.

UCCS quickly responded, this time with a woman-up free position goal to make it 8-6 with 6:36 remaining in the third quarter. The home team added another, this time after the caused turnover to go up 9-6 with two minutes on the clock. The Mountain Lions continued to roll through the final two minutes of the quarter, scoring another pair of goals to see an 11-6 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

The Skyhawks struck first in the fourth quarter, this time off the stick of Velasco to make it 11-7 with 12 minutes to play. Kiyokawa won the ensuing draw, leading to another shot and goal for the Skyhawks. The team's eighth goal of the afternoon came from Brown, her fifth of the season to see things at 11-8. Both goalkeepers earned saves on the following plays, but UCCS made the most of another free position opportunity to go ahead 12-8 with 7:47 to go.

The Mountain Lions dominated possession over the following three minutes of play, eventually scoring their 13th goal of the day to see their largest lead of the contest. Garcia kept the Skyhawks' hopes alive with her fourth goal of the season at the 3:15 mark, making it a four-goal deficit. UCCS buckled down defensively, though, holding Fort Lewis without a shot for the final minutes of play to secure a 13-9 win.

The Mountain Lions will advance to the RMAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will face Colorado Mesa University in the opening round. No. 7 Regis University will host the entirety of the tournament as the regular season champions.
