Women's basketball takes home 2022-23 RMAC Brechler Award

7/5/2023 10:00:00 AM

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team was named the winner of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's 2022-23 Brechler Award, recognizing the Skyhawks squad as the league's top academic women's basketball team with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.57.

The Brechler Awards are named in honor of Paul W. Brechler, a former RMAC commissioner (1976-90), and his wife Wanda Brechler, who were the first inductees into the RMAC Hall of Fame. Each team's GPA is calculated by dividing the total quality points by the total number of credits for each semester. Team GPAs were submitted to the RMAC office by each institution's compliance administrator.

The Skyhawks turned in an impressive 2022-23 campaign on and off the hardwood, highlighted by five student-athletes being named to the RMAC All-Academic teams. Junior Kelsey Sorenson headlined the group by earning First Team All-Academic Honors with a 3.93 cumulative GPA in Elementary Education.

Representing the women's basketball team on the Honor Roll was the group of Ember Cervantes (3.93 GPA, Exercise Physiology), Brooke McGee (3.61 GPA, Exercise Physiology), and Tayla Nez (3.63 GPA, Exercise Physiology) as well as sophomore Samantha Wattawa (3.48 GPA, Exercise Physiology). In order to be eligible for All-Academic accolades a student-athlete must carry a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and must have been an active student at the institution for at least two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters.

The women's basketball team as the first Fort Lewis College program to take home a Brechler Award since women's golf claimed the title in 2019.
