Thomas Jr., Monson shine as Fort Lewis comes up short in Glendale

GLENDALE, Ariz. – An 89-yard house call from Peyton Monson and a pair of trips to the end zone for Christopher Thomas Jr. highlight the evening but the Fort Lewis College football team could not otherwise find an answer for the Firestorm offense falling 49-25 at Arizona Christian University Saturday night.

The Skyhawks drop to 0-2 to begin the season while the Firestorm capture their first win and move to 1-1.

Senior Braden Wingle set a pair of career-highs tonight in total passing yards and longest completion after slinging the rock for 248 yards and a pair of touchdowns including a 79-yard dime to Thomas Jr. for his second receiving touchdown of the evening. Thomas Jr. hauled in both scores – matching his two scores across all of 2022 – in the fourth quarter and becoming the first Skyhawk to do so since Isaac Leppke in 2019.

Arizona Christian's Tyler Duncan picked up right where he left off against Fort Lewis last season. The six-foot senior just edged Wingle with 259 passing yards and three touchdowns of his own but added another 97 yards rushing and a trip to the end zone on the ground.

After giving up a pair of scores in the opening quarter to AJ Sibley and Damarreon Nelson, the Skyhawks' defense came up big in the second forcing a turnover on downs and halting the Firestorm's march downfield as time expired. Amidst Fort Lewis' defensive success, Hunter Villavicencio was able to drive a 37-yard field goal through the uprights and put FLC on the board.

Out of the half, momentum exploded for the Skyhawks when Monson returned the opening kickoff 89 yards, breaking two tackles and putting an ACU gunner on skates in the process, to pull Fort Lewis within its smallest deficit of the game, 14-10. Monson's return is the first for a touchdown since Juquelle Thompson in 2014.

ACU would not be denied, however, as the Firestorm answered Monson's return with a touchdown on the following drive and exploded in the fourth quarter for 28 points. All told Arizona Christian's offense racked up 611 yards of total offense against Fort Lewis' 330. The Skyhawks won the turnover battle forcing two fumbles to the Firestorm's lone interception. Parker Cunningham and Christopher Ponce each led FLC with nine tackles on the night.

Notables

-The Skyhawks' 82 rushing yards tonight tops all but one game from last season.
-Cunningham set a career-high with nine tackles tonight.
-Monson's 89-yard kickoff return touchdown is the first by a Skyhawks since Juquelle Thompson made a 75-yard return at Colorado Mesa in 2014.

Home Sweet Home
Next weekend Fort Lewis will look to carry tonight's momentum into Durango, Colo., and Ray Dennison Memorial Stadium for its 2023 home and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener against New Mexico Highlands University. The showdown with the Cowboys is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
