Salas scores equalizer in 1-1 draw to begin league play

PUEBLO, Colo. – Freshman Ashlyn Salas was the difference maker for Fort Lewis College women's soccer in its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener, scoring her first career goal in the 75th minute to lead her team to a 1-1 tie with CSU Pueblo.

The Skyhawks remain unbeaten in 2023 with a 4-0-3 overall record and a 0-0-1 mark in conference play. The Pack moves to 2-1-3 overall and 0-0-1 in the league.

"I think that we keep running into teams that are well prepared for us, and Pueblo was no exception," said head coach Damian Clarke. "We created some good chances in the first 10 minutes and a few in the last 10 of the first half. They dominated a lot in between."

Fort Lewis held a 12-8 advantage in shots for the match, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. The Skyhawks benefitted from four corner kicks, including one from junior Sabrina Reyes who earned her first assist of the season on Salas' goal. Seniors Aubrey Swindle and Julia Johnson each put up a pair of shots while Salas led all players with two shots on goal. Senior goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum split time between the pipes.

"Both goals in the game came from set pieces, and that shows that the game was well contested, and the draw was fair," explained Clarke. "It was great to see Ashlyn get her first career goal in a moment as big as that one."

Fort Lewis had a great look in the 10th minute when freshman Haley Stafford crossed a ball to Swindle who was charging the net. Swindle got a shot off, but the opposing keeper read the situation well and earned her first save of the day. The Pack appeared to have an opportunity in the 20th minute when a long cross met the feet of a forward just outside the box. Freshman Amber Otts, the reigning RMAC Defensive Player of the Week, was there in a flash, winning the ball and feeding it back to Bravin in goal.

CSU Pueblo managed its first shot of the half in the 34th minute, set up by a long throw-in on the right side of the field. The toss took one hop, and Lainee Vujcich sent a no-look shot over her head which sailed high of the crossbar. Freshman Jenna Salazar tallied the Skyhawks' next shot of the half after meeting a pass nine yards outside of goal. Another stout move by the opposing keeper resulted in a blocked shot to maintain a 0-0 deadlock.

Johnson echoed the attempt less than two minutes later when she caught up to a cross from sophomore Anna Tucker. Johnson took a tight angle to rattled off a shot, but the keeper was positioned well for a save. At the end of the first half, Fort Lewis held a 3-1 advantage in shots and a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal.

The Pack came out of intermission with renewed energy and fired two shots in the opening four minutes to test Rosenbaum. The senior keeper made a pair of veteran saves to hold it scoreless. The teams traded shots over the opening 15 minutes of the half, Fort Lewis seeing attempts from Johnson and Swindle, as the match remained deadlocked.

CSU Pueblo was able to break through in the 62nd minute when a scramble in front of the net resulted in a goal by Katie Bean. Fort Lewis responded with a pair of shots from junior Anika Scherer, but the home team remained ahead by one goal with under 20 minutes to play. The Skyhawks finally broke through in the 75th minute when a corner kick connected with Salas who settled the ball and made a quick move with her right foot to place her first career goal top right.

The Skyhawks rode the momentum of the late goal, sending shots on target from senior Elizabeth David and Salas to keep the opposition on its toes. Fort Lewis had another chance in the 86th minute when freshman Rylee Rustad found freshman Abila Tapia 15 yards from goal, but a favorable bounce resulted in another save for Genis. The final shot of the match came from freshman Kyla Hill, resulting in the opposing keeper's eighth save as time expired.
