ThunderWolves defense stymies Skyhawks at home

DURANGO, Colo. – Neither the Skyhawks offense nor defense could find its footing Saturday afternoon as the Colorado State University Pueblo football team rolled to a school record 85-7 victory over Fort Lewis College at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
 
"CSU Pueblo is a good team, they did a good job and beat us soundly," head coach Johnny Cox shared. "We just have to continue to grow and there's no substitution for it. The energy and foundation are there. The guys were still into it, encouraging their teammates, and fired up for the plays they were making at the end of the game. This is just a process that takes a bit of time."
 
Fort Lewis simply had no answer for CSU Pueblo's offense as the ThunderWolves ran up 764 yards of total offense by way of 355 through the air and 409 on the ground. Pack quarterback Chance Fuller dished out 174 yards and five touchdowns before second-string quarterback Steven Croell added another 122 yards and a score on eight out of nine passing attempts.
 
Reggie Retzlaff hauled in three touchdowns and 105 yards on three catches. Three additional ThunderWolves brought in receiving touchdowns while five members of The Pack rushed for a sore as well.   
 
Braden Wingle was 11-for-18 (61.1%) for 82 yards while backup quarterback Sam Jones added another 12 yards on three completions. Fort Lewis' quarterbacks were sacked eight times for a combined loss of 53 yards.
 
Croix Burney ruined CSU Pueblo's shutout as the sophomore found an open gap and beat The Pack's final defensive back to the corner for an 80-yard rushing touchdown, the first trip to the end zone of Burney's career. Burney finished the afternoon with 109 yards on 12 attempts.
 
Jacob Penney and Parker Cunningham had solid performances on the defensive side of the ball as they led the roster with 11 and 10 total tackles, respectively. Penny also recorded the only FLC sack for a four-yard loss.  
 
Notables
-Burney scored the first rushing touchdown of his career while leading the offense with 109 yards: the single-most by a Skyhawk this season, the first 100+ yard performance since 2021, and the longest single-rush since at least 2013.
-Hunter Villavicencio's 75-yard punt is the second-longest in the RMAC this season.
-Penney's 11 total tackles it the most in a single game by a Skyhawk this season.
 
Next Up
The road awaits Fort Lewis once again and this time the Skyhawks are traveling to Chadron, Neb., for a battle of the birds at Chadron State College. The Skyhawks and Eagles are slated for a 1:00 p.m. kick-off at Don Beebe Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 7.
