Eagles fly past Skyhawks in Chadron

CHADRON, Neb. – The Skyhawks' offense was able to bounce back this week and put up the third-most points scored this season, however, the defense had no answer for the Eagles' attack as Fort Lewis College (0-6, 0-4 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) was dealt a 57-20 loss by Chadron State College (2-4, 1-3 RMAC) at Don Beebe Stadium.
 
"It's disappointing to lose and Chadron is a good team. I felt like we prepared to really compete well today, and I believe did so in the second half," head coach Johnny Cox shared. "We didn't come out swinging like we needed to in the first half. There are sparks there on offense and defense that we can build off of, we just need our guys to continue learning our schemes and find a way to start faster across the board."

The Skyhawks went 4-for-4 in red zone attempts this afternoon led by Hunter Villavicencio with a pair of 20 and 27-yard field goals in the first quarter. Joseph Barreras rushed for his first touchdown of the year, going for four yards while dragging an Eagles defender after taking the direct snap. Peyton Monson hauled in the final score of the afternoon with a five-yard receiving touchdown from Braden Wingle.  
 
Chadron State dished out 559 total yards on the back of 321 passing yards and another 238 rushing. Quarterback Preston Pearson went off 306 yards and five touchdowns on 14 completions in 16 attempts (87.5%) while rushing for another 59 yards. Tommy Thomas hauled in seven catches for 225 yards and four touchdowns and Jake Marschall rushed for 95 yards and two scores.
 
Wingle was 21-for-26 (80.8%) for 193 yards while taking four sacks. Cameron Mack led all FLC backs with 12 attempts and 52 yards. Drake Cortez recorded a team-high four catches while Zachary Gaumont led the Skyhawks with 47 yards on one reception.
 
Fort Lewis gave up two fumbles to Chadron State's one while Elijah Thorp blocked the second punt for the Skyhawks this season.
 
Notables
-Chadron State improves to 33-5 in the all-time series.
-Fort Lewis' 20 points scored is the third-most this season. FLC has now scored 99 points thus far this season, surpassing its 2022 season total of 82.
-The Skyhawks have blocked two punts and one field goal this season.
-Wingle improved his completion percentage to 64.1% for the year, fourth best in the RMAC. Wingle now has 2,617 career passing yards, ranking 13th all-time in a Skyhawks uniform.
-Monson ties Gaumont and Christopher Thomas Jr. with two receiving touchdowns this season.

The Skyhawks are slated to celebrate homecoming, presented by Durango Coca-Cola and Morehart Murphy Regional Auto Center, next week as Colorado Mesa University (2-4, 1-3 RMAC) comes to Durango, Colo. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets online in advance and arrive early to take part in tailgating and pregame festivities. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
