Women's basketball gears up for another RMAC road trip, faces UCCS and Regis

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball is heading to the Front Range this week for another set of road Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests. The Skyhawks will begin the slate on Friday against UCCS before facing Regis University for a Saturday tip-off.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis played in two overtime road games last week, coming away with a win over South Dakota Mines (77-73) and a loss to Black Hills State (74-77). In the win over the Hardrockers, Fort Lewis shot 39.7 percent (23-of-58) from the field compared to a 41.3 percent (26-of-63) mark for South Dakota Mines. A difference maker in the contest came via free throws where the Skyhawks knocked down 25 compared to 12 for the Hardrockers. Fort Lewis forced 23 turnovers while committing just 13 of their own and scored 23 points off of turnovers.

The narrow loss to the Yellow Jackets saw Fort Lewis shoot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) from the field compared to a 40.6 percent (26-of-64) mark for BHSU. The Yellow Jackets struggled at the free throw line, boasting a 55.2 percent (16-of-29) versus an 80 percent (20-of-25) mark for the Skyhawks. BHSU edged out Fort Lewis in rebounds (50-33), but the Skyhawks forced 30 turnovers and converted for 31 points off said turnovers.

Scouting UCCS
The Mountain Lions are 8-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play following a split against Regis (L, 51-59) and Western Colorado (W, 66-47) last week. UCCS is outscoring its opponents by 7.2 points this season and boasts a .434 field goal percentage. The team turns the ball over more than their foes but averages 10.5 steals per game compared to 7.4 on the other side.

Maison White leads the team by averaging 14.2 points per game on an RMAC-best field goal percentage of .610. Two players follow with at least nine points per game. White is also the team's leading rebounder at 9.1 per game with the next closest players averaging 3.1 per game. Rylee Ottmann, Breelyn Robinson, and Amyah Moore Allen are tied for the team lead with 28 assists apiece.

Fort Lewis leads the series history with a 13-10 record. Despite the historical edge, the Skyhawks have dropped the last four games to the Mountain Lions. The Skyhawks are 2-7 when facing the Mountain Lions on the road.

Scouting Regis University
The Rangers are 10-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play following wins over Chadron State (83-48), Colorado Christian (71-49), and UCCS (59-51). Regis is averaging 72.4 points per game compared to 60.4 for their opponents. The Rangers shoot .414 percent from the field and average over 40 rebounds per game.

Josey Ryan leads the team by averaging 14.9 points per game, followed by three players who are averaging double-digits. Madison Diercks leads the way with 7.8 rebounds per game while Morgan Smith is coming away with 7.2 per game. Erin Fry is the team's assist leader with 67 on the year.

Fort Lewis leads the all-time series with a 14-11 record but has dropped the last three meetings. The Skyhawks are 6-6 when facing the Rangers on the road.

Around the RMAC
Mines leads the conference ranks with a 12-1 overall record and a 7-0 mark in league play, followed by Adams State (11-4, 6-1). Fort Lewis is tied for fifth with a 5-2 mark alongside Regis. In the statistical standings, Fort Lewis ranks seventh in points per game (66.2), seventh in 3-point FGs made (6.7), fifth in free throw percentage (75.2), fourth in scoring defense (60.0), second in turnover margin (6.62), second in steals (14.08), and first in attendance (780).

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis is led by sophomore Lanae Billy who is averaging 14.5 points per game, followed by senior Kelsey Sorenson who is putting up 13.8 per game. From there, five players average over five points per game. Junior Samantha Wattawa leads the team with 5.9 rebounds per game. Billy leads the team and the conference with a 3.6 steals per game average, and junior Sadie Misner is close behind with 2.5 per game (6th in RMAC). Billy's mark ranks eighth in all of NCAA Division II.

Fort Lewis will return to Whalen Gymnasium for the first time in 2024 on Friday, January 19 against Chadron State College. The following night, the Skyhawks will take on Colorado Christian University.
