No. 9/16 Skyhawks suffer first conference setback to Mountain Lions, 79-70

Fort Lewis dealt just second road loss in two years

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Despite dominating in the post by 50 points to 28, the ninth-ranked Fort Lewis men's basketball team was unable to slow down the Mountain Lions' elite passing and deep shooting resulting in Fort Lewis suffering its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference loss of the year at the hands of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Friday night in Gallogly Event Center.

Fort Lewis sees its 12-game win streak come to an end as the Skyhawks fall to 12-2 overall and 7-1 in RMAC play. UCCS advances to 7-8 overall and 3-6 in conference games.

UCCS knocked down a season-high 14 treys on 43.8 percent (14-32) shooting from beyond the arc while dishing out 25 assists on the night; tying the third-most in program history.

Four Mountain Lions produced double-digit performances led by Noah Baca's career-high 20 points on 8-10 shooting including a 4-4 night from deep while also capturing four rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Xavier Martinez added another 12 points and Jesse Iweze and Hannes Saar provided 10 additional points each.

While every Skyhawk to touch the court recorded a point, only Malik Whitaker and Obi Agbim finished in double-figures for the blue and gold with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Brayden Carter grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the contest and finished his evening a perfect 4-4 from the field.

The Skyhawks capped off the night with a 47.6 percent (30-63) clip from the floor and made two more baskets than the Mountain Lions but knocked down only three treys on 13 attempts (23.1 percent).

Quotables
"Tonight [UCCS] outplayed us and outcoached us. They made more game-winning plays than us, and we have to sit with that feeling. Playing in this back-to-back league, we'll find out a lot about ourselves tomorrow night. Road games in this conference are extremely tough. Regardless of how Fridays go, we have to be prepared to bounce back and go out and fight all 40 minutes again tomorrow night." – Head coach Bob Pietrack.

Notables
-UCCS drained a season-high 14 three-pointers while also matching the third-most assists in program history with 25.
-The Mountain Lions secure just their 14th win to Fort Lewis' 40. In addition, FLC is now 15-10 on the road at UCCS.
-The Skyhawks suffer just their second road loss in the past two seasons and first since Dec. 17, 2022.
