Women's basketball travels to face Mavericks and Griffins

DURANGO, Colo. – Following a pair of impressive home wins for the Skyhawks women's basketball team, the group will be heading back on the road to continue league play against Colorado Mesa University and Westminster University.
 
Last Time Out
It was a weekend to remember for the Skyhawks women's basketball team. Playing in front of two electric home crowds, the team picked up a sweep of Chadron State College (71-58) and Colorado Christian University (70-64). In the win over the Eagles, The Skyhawks shot 32.8 percent from the field. The Skyhawks benefited from nine made threes versus just three from the Eagles. Fort Lewis forced 26 turnovers and scored 21 points via the turnover.

Billy led all players with 28 points, matching a season-high and establishing a career-high with six made three-pointers. Senior Kelsey Sorenson followed with 13 points, and sophomore Kate Gallery rounded out double-digit scorers with 10 points. Junior Samantha Wattawa led the team with nine rebounds.

Against the Cougars, the Skyhawks benefited from sharp shooting in the second quarter (70%) to close out the game with a 39.6 percent mark from the field. The Cougars turned in a 30.3 percent clip and attempted 28 more shots than the Skyhawks. Colorado Christian stuck thanks to their ability to offensive rebound, racking up 21 offensive boards versus seven for Fort Lewis.

Billy led the team with 17 points and was five-of-nine from three. S Sorenson followed with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists. Wattawa was a key piece of the puzzle on both sides of the ball, earning a double-double (11 rebounds, 10 points) and marking all six free throw attempts in crucial moments. Juniors Sadie Misner and Avery Evans recorded 12 points and 10 points, respectively.
 
Scouting Colorado Mesa University
The Mavericks are 14-4 on the year with an 8-3 mark in conference play. The team won both games last week over Black Hills State (53-51) and South Dakota Mines (71-58). Mesa is undefeated at home with an 8-0 record. As a team, the Mavericks average 69.6 points per game and hold their opponents to 58.7 per game. They shoot 42.8 percent from the field and average 7.6 made three-pointers per game.

Olivia Reed leads the way with 16.9 points per game (5th RMAC) and 10.8 rebounds per game (2nd RMAC). Mason Rowland follows with 14.9 points per game. Four additional players are averaging over seven points per game. Kylie Kravig leads the team and the conference with 6.7 assists per game.

Fort Lewis is 5-15 all-time against Mesa and has lost the last 10 matchups.
 
Scouting Westminster University
The Griffins are 3-14 overall and 1-10 in conference play after a weekend split with South Dakota Mines (W, 69-59) and Black Hills State (L, 48-72). Westminster is averaging 53.7 points per game compared to 65.5 from their opponents. They shoot 37.7 percent from the field and 24.3 from three.

Teuila Nawahine is averaging 13.2 points per game to lead all players, followed by three at nine or more points per game. Maunayia Harrigfeld leads the team with 6.5 rebounds per game.

Fort Lewis is 10-6 all-time against Westminster, including a 58-52 home win on December 16th. Gallery led the team with 19 points in the win.
 
Around the RMAC
Mines leads the conference ranks with a 15-2 overall record and a 10-1 mark in league play, Regis (14-3, 9-2 RMAC) and Colorado Mesa (14-4, 8-3 RMAC). Fort Lewis sits in sixth at the midway point of the season with a league record of 7-4. In the statistical standings, Fort Lewis ranks seventh in points per game (65.9), seventh in 3-point FGs made (6.7), fifth in free throw percentage (76.0), fourth in scoring defense (61.8), second in turnover margin (5.2), second in steals (13.4), and first in attendance (858).

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis is led by sophomore Lanae Billy who is averaging 16.2 points per game (8th RMAC), followed by senior Kelsey Sorenson who is putting up 13.3 per game (13th RMAC). From there, six players average over five points per game. Junior Samantha Wattawa leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per game (13th RMAC). Billy leads the team and ranks second in the conference with a 3.4 steals per game average, and junior Sadie Misner is close behind with 2.5 per game (6th in RMAC). Billy's mark ranks 10th in all of NCAA Division II.
 
Packing the House
Whalen Gymnasium has been rocking this season, and the passion and support has translated to national recognition for the women's program. Following last week's games, including Friday's crowd of over 1,400 fans, the Skyhawks are ranked eighth in NCAA Division II in total attendance. Fort Lewis will be back home on Friday, February 2 with a 5:00 p.m. tipoff against No. 12 Colorado School of Mines. The Skyhawks wrap up the homestand with a 4:00 p.m. game on Saturday versus MSU Denver.
