No. 10/24 Skyhawks hang on to defeat Hardrockers in an 82-76 thriller

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A balanced scoring effort that saw every Skyhawk touch the floor and record a point was the key to success as the tenth-ranked Fort Lewis men's basketball team (11-1, 6-0 RMAC) picked up its 11th-consecutive win Friday night in the King Center as the Skyhawks outlasted South Dakota Mines (5-8, 3-4 RMAC) 82-76.

FLC moves to 7-3 all-time against South Dakota Mines and captures the program's 10th straight conference road win since Jan. 13, 2023.

Despite coughing up 17 turnovers, the second-most this season, Fort Lewis managed to force 18 turnovers out of the Hardrockers and cash in 18 points on said turnovers while also out-rebounding SDM 32-27.

The night began in favor of the home squad as Cameron Cohn – who led all scorers on the night with a 29-point performance on 7-of-16 shooting and 13-of-14 at the charity stripe – knocked down a free-throw for a six-point Hardrocker lead.

Fort Lewis then responded by sinking four of its five next shots while forcing back-to-back turnovers to quickly flip the script 22-16 in favor of FLC before stretching the lead out to as many as 12 points heading into the locker room.

Out of the half, South Dakota Mines began to find bursts of effective offense, cutting into the Skyhawks' lead but hovering around a five-point deficit. The Hardrockers finally cut the lead down to two, 78-76, with 52 seconds remaining, but a steal from Brayden Carter and two free throws from Junior Garbrah put the game out of reach in the waning seconds.

Obi Agbim led the charge with 13 points, Carter another 12, and Amondo Miller Jr. 10 more to round out those in double figures while three additional Skyhawks tallied nine points each: Sekou Dembele, Malik Whitaker, and Samier Kinsler.

The Skyhawks also dominated South Dakota Mines on points in the paint 48-18 and bench points 41 to nine.

Quotable
"Cameron Cohn was outstanding for [South Dakota Mines] tonight. A lot of deep shots fell for them when they needed it and when you play on the road in the RMAC you have to be able to weather those punches. I thought we came to play tonight, regardless of adversity. I have to give credit to Obi and Junior, two of our championship returners from last season, they stepped up late and made game-winning plays when we needed them most. Every game in this conference is going to be extremely tough and we have to prepare for another one tomorrow night." – Head coach Bob Pietrack
