DURANGO, Colo. – It's Homecoming Week up on the rim as Fort Lewis football (1-6, 0-5 RMAC) returns to Ray Dennison Memorial Field this Saturday afternoon to wrestle with the surging Mavericks from Colorado Mesa (5-2, 4-1 RMAC) in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup at 2 p.m.

Homecoming Week
The 2024 Homecoming Week, presented by Durango Motor Company and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad, has been in full swing on campus, with events spanning the entire week. Highlighting Saturday's events are registered student organizations, a live band, bounce houses, a campus meal, and pregame festivities starting at noon.

Death, Taxes, Penney
Six-foot starting linebacker Jacob Penney has continued his defensive tear throughout week seven of play, with the redshirt sophomore posting 76 tackles thus far, including 47 solo and 29 assisted, as well as 7.0 tackles for 19 yards lost, three quarterback hurries, one fumble recovery, and two forced fumbles. Penney leads the RMAC by seven tackles and ranks sixth in NCAA DII with 10.9 tackles per game.

No Fly Zone
Cornerback Jordan Thomas has also burst onto the scene this season with the sophomore from Oro Valley, Ariz., leading the roster and the conference with eight pass breakups thus far, a mark that ranks seventh in DII and sits just three behind the nation's leader Champ Baker, who owns 11 total for No. 17-ranked Carson-Newman (7-0, 5-0 SAC). In addition, the Canyon del Oro High School product has made 31 total tackles featuring 24 solo, seven assisted, with a pair of tackles for two yards lost as well.

Better at Home
Fort Lewis has played a better brand of football this season, especially on Ray Dennison Memorial Field, where the Skyhawks snapped a 40-game losing streak, defeating Arizona Christian (1-5, 1-4 Frontier) 17-13 back in week two. From the comforts of home grass, the only natural surface in the RMAC, FLC is averaging 347.3 yards and 23.5 points per game against 274.4 yards and 17.3 points for the season. In addition, and unlike seasons past, Fort Lewis has found themselves in competitive games including trailing South Dakota Mines (3-5, 2-4 RMAC) 35-26 heading into the fourth quarter and leading No. 16-ranked CSU Pueblo (7-1, 6-0 RMAC) 14-13 at halftime and trailing just 30-21 heading into the final quarter.

Stampeding Mavericks
Colorado Mesa sits one game back from the conference lead with only four weeks left, and depending on other marquee matchups, could still contend to claim the 2024 RMAC Championship, which has belonged to No. 10-ranked Colorado School of Mines (6-1, 4-1 RMAC) since 2017.  This season, the Mavericks are averaging 21.0 points per game on 328.1 yards of total offense while holding opponents to 16.4 points per game, which ranks 23rd nationally behind defending national champions Harding (6-1, 6-1 GAC).

Key Mavericks
Guiding Colorado Mesa this season is redshirt sophomore and recent San Diego State transfer Liu Aumavae. The six-foot-three Waldorf, Maryland, native has thrown for 960 yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions on 83-of-135 (61.5 percent) passing. While Aumavae is not a critical piece in the ground game, junior Taylor Aiden has gotten the job done for CMU, rushing for 456 net yards and four touchdowns on 93 carries (4.9 yards per attempt) this season. While six individuals have picked off opposing quarterbacks, sophomore Jason Thome leads the conference and sits tied for the fifth-most interceptions in DII with four on the season.

Route 160 Rival
Next week, Fort Lewis has its shortest trip of the season, with the Skyhawks heading over Wolf Creek Pass for a 6 p.m. showdown under the lights of Rex Field at Adams State (0-7, 0-5 RMAC) over in Alamosa. It will mark the 63rd meeting of all-time between the two Southern Colorado rivals.
