Career night for Nunez leads Skyhawks to key win over Rangers

DURANGO, Colo. – Sophomore outside hitter Alina Nunez was the hot hand on Friday evening, putting away 22 kills and scoring 25 points in a standout victory of Regis University in conference action.

The win over the Rangers snapped the Skyhawks' 16-match losing streak, which dated back to 2008. Fort Lewis improved to 8-12 on the year and 4-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play, while Regis fell to 10-9 and 6-3 RMAC.

Despite being blocked 16 times by the Rangers, the Skyhawks hit for a season-high efficiency of .311—the best clip since a .348 mark in a sweep of Black Hills State last season. Fort Lewis hit an even .500 in the final set to seal the victory.

Nunez led the team offensively with her 22 kills while hitting .447, followed by sophomore Jordan DeJesus who played the final two sets and put away 12 kills while hitting .500. Junior Ella Butler added 11 kills (.318) to go along with four blocks. Senior Natalia Lambos coordinated a dynamic offense and totaled 55 assists.

The Rangers built a lead early in the first set, but Fort Lewis chipped away and took its first lead after a block from Nunez and Butler. The Skyhawks rode the momentum to a 13-8 lead after the second block of the set, this one from redshirt freshman Averie Dembickie, hit the floor. Scoring runs continued to favor Fort Lewis as a Nunez ace capped off another burst for an 18-11 lead. Regis had a late run to pull within three at set point, but Lauren Shea ripped her second kill of the set to give her team the opener.

Regis controlled the early points of set two, a set where the visitors would ultimately hit .419, as Fort Lewis saw a 10-4 deficit. Dembickie scored with a kill out of the middle to earn a side out, but the Rangers responded with a 5-0 run to make it 15-5. The Skyhawks went to work at chipping away at the difference, scoring seven of the next nine points to pull within five. Despite the resurgence, the Rangers capitalized on several Skyhawks attacking errors late to take a 25-17 set.

The bad taste in the Skyhawks' mouths didn't last long, though, as the home team exploded out to a 9-3 lead in the third set. Butler got Fort Lewis to double-figures with a solo block, and the block continued to work to make it 13-5. Regis responded with a four-point run thanks to kills from the outside and middle to make it 15-13. Fort Lewis remained in control of the pace and rebuilt a five-point off the arm of DeJesus. The teams went point for point from there, but kills by Nunez, Butler, and Shea wrapped up set three in a 25-17 score.

The fourth set was evenly matched through 10 points with the teams trading a handful of errors for a narrow 6-4 Fort Lewis lead. The Skyhawks found breathing room thanks to a 5-0 run that saw a pair of kills from Butler make it 12-5. The Skyhawks held on to that margin through the midway point of the set as the teams both sided out with impressive efficiency. Nunez got the Skyhawks to 20 points with a five-point edge, and Regis got as close as four points after a kill from its All-American middle made it 22-18. Poised and controlled, the Skyhawks benefitted from two kills by DeJesus and a match-ending block from the sophomore to seal the win. DeJesus was the catalyst in the set, hitting .750 with six errorless kills. Nunez wasn't far behind with five kills on seven errorless swings.

Fort Lewis (8-12, 4-6 RMAC) closes out Homecoming weekend tomorrow with a 7:00 p.m. first serve against UCCS (9-10, 4-5 RMAC). The Mountain Lions are coming off a four-set loss to Western Colorado this evening.
