Three players record double-doubles in reverse sweep of Mountain Lions

DURANGO, Colo. – On a night that featured three double-doubles, momentum swings, and gutsy performances, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team secured a reverse sweep over UCCS to close out Homecoming week with a pair of wins.

The win moved Fort Lewis to 9-12 overall and 5-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while UCCS dropped to 9-11, 4-6 RMAC.

The Skyhawks hit .231 on the night compared to a .221 efficiency for the Mountain Lions. Fort Lewis added 73 digs, seven blocks, and six aces.

Coordinating the offense and matching a career-high in assists was senior Natalia Lambos with 58 assists and 12 digs. Junior Ella Butler tied for the team lead with 15 kills on a .323 efficiency, and sophomore Jordan DeJesus matched her with 15 kills. The team's most productive outlet was redshirt freshman Averie Dembickie who secured a career-high 13 kills on 20 swings (.550). Sophomore Alina Nunez earned 13 kills to go along with a team-high 17 digs. Fifth-year Lauren Shea also supplied a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. Freshman libero Emery Pomroy came away with 14 digs.

The Mountain Lions saw the advantage early in set one when a six-point scoring run had them up 9-4. Fort Lewis answered with a run of its own that featured a pair of aces by freshman Maddy Shumway to see a 10-9 lead. The teams played close from there, but it was a dominant run by UCCS that ultimately ended the opener. The Mountain Lions overcame a four-point deficit late, riding an 8-0 run to claim a 25-21 set.

UCCS also enjoyed a lead in the second set, scoring four in a row following a DeJesus kill to go up 11-7. The Skyhawks chipped away thanks to kills from Dembickie and DeJesus, but the Mountain Lions countered with quick side outs to hold onto the lead. Fort Lewis got as close as four points three times down the stretch, but kills from UCCS on both pins ended the set in a 25-19 score. Fort Lewis hit .114 in the set compared to a .303 number for UCCS.

The energy was notably better in the third set despite the score remaining tied up until the 10-10 mark. Fort Lewis broke the spell with kills from Butler and Nunez, followed by two points from Dembickie to find space at 14-11. The teams traded points before a 3-0 surge by UCCS gave the visitors a 19-18 lead. Butler was responsible for a clutch side out kill, and the duo of Dembickie and Shea added two more to tie the score at 21-21. A setter dump by the Mountain Lions gave them the lead, but Fort Lewis ended the set on a 4-1 run to seal a 25-23 victory.

The lead swapped sides to begin the fourth set before a pair of three-point runs had Fort Lewis ahead 10-6. UCCS scored the next two points to pull within two and eventually knotted things up at 14-14 following a commanding block. The teams tied four more times midway through the set, and the Skyhawks earned a slight advantage with a UCCS error and a kill from DeJesus making it 21-19. A service error gave the Mountain Lions another point, and the Skyhawks responded with back-to-back Dembickie kills and a UCCS error to reach set point. The visitors found off one set point, but an eventual service error sent the teams to a decisive fifth.

Fort Lewis found itself in a hole to begin the final set after an ace and three kills made it 5-1. The Skyhawks collected and rattled off six-straight points to take the lead at 8-6 as the teams switched sides. Fort Lewis continued to score in strings of two to hold on to a multi-point lead and saw match point thanks to a block by Butler and DeJesus. UCCS scored once more, but Butler ended the match with her 15th kill for a 15-10 final.
