Cougars score early and shutout Skyhawks in 2-0 final

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Colorado Christian University women's soccer was the beneficiary of two, first-half goals en route to a 2-0 win over Fort Lewis College in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Friday afternoon.

With the loss, Fort Lewis dropped to 7-5-3 overall and 4-4-2 in the RMAC. Colorado Christian improved to 6-7-2, 5-4-1 RMAC.

The Skyhawks outshot the Cougars 18-14 on the match, but the teams were even with seven shots on goal apiece. There were 24 fouls and three yellow cards assessed.

Senior Sabrina Reyes led the team with three shots on goal while playing 90 minutes, followed by senior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein who had two shots on goal in 90 minutes. Fifth-year McKenna Ford was active for the entire 90-minute match alongside junior Rachel Peebles. Fifth-year goalkeeper Riley Bravin made five saves in the first half.

Fort Lewis had its first scoring chance in the third minute when a foul lined Danielle Gonzales up for a free kick 35 yards out. The shot looked like it had an opportunity to sneak in but ultimately deflected off the crossbar. Coulter had the same misfortune in the sixth minute when a well-struck ball from outside the box hit the crossbar to account for the team's second near miss.

The Cougars clocked their first shot on goal of the match in the 15th minute when Jessie Sims sent a sharp one-touch shot toward Bravin just six yards outside the goal. Bravin made an exceptional diving save to her left, and her defensive counterparts cleared the ball to end the threat. The teams traded long-range shots that missed high before Colorado Christian tested Bravin in the 21st minute. The fifth-year made a comfortable save before sending the ball ahead to her teammates. The Cougars eventually found a go-ahead goal in the 24th minute after Capri Dewing beat multiple defenders near the top of the box and sent a shot tucked in just below the crossbar.

Colorado Christian made it a 2-0 match 13 minutes later after a deflected shot snuck past Bravin. The play developed when a corner kick was cleared out by Fort Lewis but found the feet of the Colorado Christian player. The Cougars' Ireland Jeffrey sent a shot toward goal, and the deflection off her own teammate's shoulder caught a lucky redirect to surprise Bravin and the Fort Lewis defenders. The Skyhawks added pressure late in the half thanks to shots on goal by Jenna Salazar and Gabi Meraz-Fishbein before the horn sounded.

The second half began with a shot on goal by Anna Tucker that was saved by Alana Lopp in goal. The teams played solid defense over the next 15 minutes to keep one another off the board. The Cougars had another promising look in the 64th minute when Danel Hach placed a dribbling shot low-left, but Rosenbaum was able to deflect the shot with her leg.

Meraz-Fishbein registered a shot on goal in the 70th minute with a sharp shot from distance resulting in a save for the Cougars' keeper. Reyes was credited with Fort Lewis' sixth shot on goal of the match after intercepting a pass and sending one from distance into the hands of a leaping keeper. The final minutes of the match saw shots from sophomore Amber Otts and Tucker, but nothing was getting past the opposing keeper as time expired on the shutout.
