Skyhawks, Rosenbaum secure tie versus (RV) Roadrunners

DENVER – Skyhawks women's soccer picked up a crucial point behind a complete game shutout by fifth-year goalkeeper Katlyn Rosenbaum, playing to a 0-0 draw against (RV) MSU Denver on Sunday afternoon.

The Skyhawks are now 7-5-4 on the year and 4-4-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Roadrunners moved to 9-3-5 overall and 8-2-1 in the league.

"That was a very gutsy point earned today," said head coach Damian Clarke. "It was a great job by the team and our coaching staff to stick into a really tough weekend."

Fort Lewis now has 15 conference points, ranking seventh with one conference match left on the schedule. The top eight teams in the conference advance to the RMAC Tournament. If Fort Lewis were to hold on to the seventh spot, they would be in contention to host the play-in game between the seven and eight seeds on Friday, November 8.

Sunday's match saw 13 shots for MSU Denver versus eight for Fort Lewis, and the teams each sent three shots on goal. There were 13 fouls and one yellow card assessed. Senior Sabrina Reyes led the team with two shots on goal while sophomore Haley Stafford was responsible for the team's third. Sophomore Amber Otts, junior Rachel Peebles, and senior Danielle Gonzales joined Rosenbaum by playing the full 90 minutes. That foursome was also responsible for the defensive shutout that saw three saves by Rosenbaum.

MSU Denver had the first shot of the match, followed by a play that saw their everyday goalkeeper, Kylie Bach, leave the match. Lucky for MSU Denver, the star keeper returned six minutes later. The Roadrunners continued to dominate offensively but struggled to put shots on frame. Reyes was the first player to send a shot on goal, but Bach proved to be steady between the pipes for her first save. Rosenbaum was the next to flex her goalkeeping prowess, making her first save of the match in the 32nd minute to hold the score.

Stafford was the next to register a shot on goal after collecting a deep pass from Otts. The sophomore took a shot on the second bounce, but Bach met her shot for a save. The final 30 seconds saw one more chance for MSU Denver to take a lead heading into the break, but Rosenbaum made the save with a diving punch to her left.

Rosenbaum was tested early in the second half, too, but added another save just three minutes into play. The teams played lock-down defense following the early MSU Denver threat with the next shot on goal coming in the 61st minute. This chance by Reyes ended in a low-left save for Bach to maintain the scoreless match. Fort Lewis added pressure in the late portion of the second half, firing off four shots that drifted off target. Equally, the Skyhawks' defense played its part in holding the Roadrunners to three shots in the final 20 minutes to end in a tie.

Fort Lewis (7-5-4, 4-4-3 RMAC) closes out the regular season at home on Wednesday, November 6 with a 3:00 p.m. match against Western Colorado University (4-9-4, 3-5-3 RMAC). Depending on the outcome this week on the road, the match versus the Mountaineers may provide crucial points in the race to earn a postseason home match.
