Women's basketball falls to Colorado Mesa in invite opener

SALT LAKE CITY – Colorado Mesa University used a dominant second-half to earn a 75-48 win over Fort Lewis College in nonconference women's basketball action on Friday afternoon at the Westminster Invite.

The loss moved Fort Lewis to 1-3 on the year while Colorado Mesa improved o 2-1 overall.

The Skyhawks shot 40 percent (18-of-45) from the field and 40 percent from three and the free throw line. The Mavericks shot 53.7 percent (29-of-54) from the field and benefitted from 12 made free throws compared to just four for Fort Lewis. Colorado Mesa held a 28-25 advantage in rebounds and committed 10 fewer turnovers than Fort Lewis.

Senior Livia Knapp led the Skyhawks with 11 points, followed by a 10 point performance from freshman Claudia Palacio Gamez. Redshirt junior Sydney Bevington pulled down nine rebounds in 18 minutes of work. Junior Deniece Ryan and Palacio Gamez combined for six assists

The Skyhawks began the game in a 4-0 hole after early turnovers and a pair of fouls allowed Colorado Mesa to maintain possession. Seniors Darla Hernandez and Eva Kingston combined for five points for a 6-5 deficit after three minutes of play. Palacio Gamez gave Fort Lewis its first lead of the afternoon after converting an offensive rebound for two points and a 7-6 score. The lead swapped sides several times through the midway point of the quarter before the threes began to fall for Fort Lewis, making it 20-15. The Skyhawks were held scoreless in the last three minutes while the Mavericks fought back to make it a 20-20 tie heading into the second quarter.

The Mavericks reclaimed the lead with a quick jumper to open quarter two, but Hernandez knocked down one of her own to see a 22-22 deadlock after two minutes. Colorado Mesa took advantage of rebounding prowess over the next three minutes to make it 30-22 with six points coming via offensive rebounds. Knapp scored five points down the stretch to make it a 36-29 score in favor of Colorado Mesa heading into the break.

Sophomore Trista Hoobler cut the difference to five points at the 7:33 mark of the third quarter with a three-pointer, but the Mavericks went on a 70-scoring run to reclaim a double-digit lead. Colorado Mesa continued to roll despite Fort Lewis taking better care off the ball off the offensive glass. The Mavericks ended the third quarter on a 10-point scoring run, holding the Skyhawks scoreless for nearly five minutes to capture a 55-35 lead after three quarters.

Ryan got the Skyhawks on track early in the fourth with a three-point play, but the Mavericks answered with a 7-0 run to make it 63-38. Knapp snapped the run with another made three, giving her 11 points on the night, with under six minutes to play. Much of the remainder of the fourth quarter was spent at the charity stripe where the teams went blow for blow. Bevington knocked down a jumper in the final minute, followed by a layup from Palacio Gamez with 31 seconds remaining to close out the game in a 75-48 final.

Fort Lewis (1-3) returns to the hardwood in Salt Lake City tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. when it takes on Westminster University (0-3) to conclude the Westminster Invite.
