11/15/2024 11:12:00 AM

DURANGO, Colo. – Back-to-back penalty kick shootouts have led the Fort Lewis College (9-5-6) women's soccer team to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament Championship match where they will face No.1-seeded and the nation's top-ranked team in Colorado School of Mines (18-0-1).

No. 7-seeded Fort Lewis will face Mines on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. inside of Stermole Soccer Stadium where the Orediggers are 9-0 this season. The Orediggers earned a 2-1 win over UCCS in the Semifinal round thanks to the match-tying goal in the 76th minute and the go-ahead goal in the 82nd minute. The Skyhawks faced off against the Orediggers at home on October 11 and fell in a 5-1 final. The match was much tighter than the four-goal differential would imply, though. Fort Lewis registered 13 shots compared to 15 for Mines and sent six shots on goal.

Semifinal Madness
Fort Lewis needed 110 minutes and another penalty kick shootout to advance to the Championship game. (RV) MSU Denver was the first to score after a header just 48 seconds into the second half. Fort Lewis responded with a goal by senior Sabrina Reyes in the 73rd minute, and the teams went on to play two, scoreless overtime periods to bring on PKs.

Rosenbaum saved the first PK attempt by the Roadrunners, and Salazar followed with a make low-right for a 1-0 lead. MSU Denver scored on its next attempt, and Otts countered with a made attempt for a 2-1 edge. The Roadrunners made their third chance, followed by a make from Taylor Rittman to see a 3-2 edge. The next shot by MSU Denver found the back of the net low-right, and Reyes countered with another made shot to give her team the 4-3 lead. The Roadrunners managed to make their next chance to tie it up, but McKenna Ford sent Fort Lewis to the Championship with a shot high-right.
