Chuol Deng Defensive Player of the Week

11/25/2024 2:00:00 PM

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior forward Chuol Deng has been tabbed as the Week Three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Deng captures his first career weekly award and the second by a Skyhawk in as many weeks. It's Fort Lewis' fourth defensive weekly award over the past two seasons.

A native of Juba, South Sudan, Deng recently joined the Skyhawks after spending a season at Oakland University. Since his arrival, Deng has averaged 11.9 points and 8.5 rebounds to rank third in rebounding in the conference and first in blocked shots with 13 total and 1.6 per game, a mark that's good to tie for the 14th-most blocks in DII.

Last week, Deng helped power the Fort Lewis (5-3) defense to a pair of 82-71 and 68-53 victories over Emporia State (1-5) and Bowie State (3-4), respectively. The Skyhawks forced 23 turnovers out of the Hornets to mark the third-straight contest with 20 or more turnovers forced. In the final game of the road trip, the Skyhawks held the Bulldogs to 53 total points which is the fewest since Regis scored 52 back on Jan. 18, 2013.

Deng kicked off the weekend with a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double, his third of the season and 16th of his career, with nine defensive rebounds that limited ESU to only 12 second-chance points for the contest. Against Bowie State, Deng once again pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, 10 of which were defensive, while also making two assists and blocking three shots for the third time this year to hold the Bulldogs to zero second-chance points. In addition, he has brought in 10 or more rebounds in four of his eight games played.

Fort Lewis will return to action at home with the start of conference play on Thursday, Dec. 5, with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off against no. 19-ranked MSU Denver (3-1). It's the Skyhawks Beach Theme game, and fans are encouraged to dress in their best beach attire. The Skyhawks will then host Regis (1-3) on Saturday, Dec. 7, for a 3 p.m. tip-off and Ugly Sweater game in Whalen Gymnasium.
