Women's basketball welcomes No. 10/23 UT Tyler on Friday

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball will host No. 10/23 UT Tyler on Friday for a rare, standalone contest inside of Whalen Gymnasium.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks earned their second home win of the season last week in a 67-57 final score over Northern New Mexico College. Fort Lewis enjoyed a 46.4 percent (26-of-56) shooting night from the field and a 43.5 percent (10-of-23) performance from three—both season-highs. Northern New Mexico was 38.6 percent (17-of-44) from the field and 45 percent (9-of-20) from three while dropping in 14 of 14 free throws.

Senior Darla Hernandez led the team with 14 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double in as many games. Junior Kate Gallery followed with 11 points and freshman Claudia Palacio Gámez followed with 10 points for her second double-digit game of the year.

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis is beginning to heat up from three after a slow start to the year, knocking down a season-high 10 shots in the win over the Eagles. As a team, the Skyhawks rank fourth in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (.304) and sixth in three-point defense (.308). Free throws are still hit or miss to this point with the best performance coming in a 7-of-9 day versus Eastern New Mexico (Nov. 9). An area of contention is rebounding where Fort Lewis ranks last in the league with 29.4 per game.

Individually, Darla Hernandez is leading the team by averaging 11.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Junior Deniece Ryan follows with 8.2 points per game while shooting 54.5 percent from the field, followed by freshman Claudia Palacio Gámez who averages seven points and shoots 54.2 percent. Senior Livia Knapp leads the team in average minutes per game (31), assists per game (2.6), and steals per game (2.6).

Scouting No. 10/23 UT Tyler
The Patriots may be one of the hottest teams in the country after knocking off then No. 1 Texas Woman's University to begin Lone Star Conference play on Saturday. UT Tyler is 4-0 with wins over Colorado Christian (61-56) and CSU Pueblo (66-41). Friday's game will be the first road game of the season for the Patriots.

UT Tyler is averaging 67.3 points per game while allowing just 43 points per game from its opponents—a scoring defense that ranks fourth in NCAA DII. The team outrebounds the opposition +4.5 and scores 24.8 points per game off turnovers. The Patriots average just 15.3 turnovers per game and back it up with 14 steals per game.

Megan Mendazona is the hot hand through four games with a 21 points-per-game average. Polina Latysheva follows with 10.5 points per game while shooting 51.6 percent. Mendazona is also the leading rebounder at six per game, followed by Lovisa Hevinder and Mileina Sablinskaite at 4.3 per game. Hevinder dishes out 3.8 assists per game to lead the LSC and Sablinskaite ranks second in the conference with three steals per game.

Friday's game will be the first between Fort Lewis and UT Tyler in program history.
