Salas scores twice, Skyhawks earn RMAC Tournament home bid

FARMINGTON, N.M. – On the strength of two goals by sophomore Ashlyn Salas, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team closed out the regular-season with a dominant 4-0 win over Western Colorado University. With the win, the Skyhawks have earned a home match to begin the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament as the number seven-seed.

Fort Lewis will take on number eight-seeded Regis University at 1:00 p.m. from Dirks Field. The winner of that match will advance to face the number two-seed and No. 16-ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks on Sunday.

The win this evening improved the Skyhawks' record to 8-5-4 overall and 5-4-3 to wrap up the conference portion of the season. The Mountaineers' season came to an end with a 4-10-4 record and a 3-6-3 mark in the league.

The match saw Fort Lewis outshoot Western Colorado 20-16, but the Mountaineer held an 11-8 edge in shots on goal. The teams played a relatively clean match and combined for 13 fouls. Salas led the way with two goals, and junior Rachel Peebles and sophomore Jenna Salazar added the third and fourth. Junior Josie Coulter earned two assists to bring her season total to five, and senior Sabrina Reyes was credited with her second.

The defense and goalkeeping was as stout as it has been all season with six players competing in the full 90 minutes. The fifth-year goalkeeping duo of Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for 11 saves—including eight by Rosenbaum in the second half—to earn the shutout.

Fort Lewis was quick to take an advantage in the match after Coulter won possession in the far corner. Coulter settled and took her time finding an open body in the box. The junior crossed to Peebles who was open between two Western Colorado players, and she struck the bottom half of the crossbar with just enough force to find the back of the net for the second time this season.

The Skyhawks doubled the lead in the 11th minute, again off a feed from Coulter. Coulter's fifth assist of the season was credited after Salazar made an improbable shot by spinning around her defender and finding open space out of the keeper's reach to give her team a 2-0 lead. Western Colorado followed with its first shot on goal of the match, an attempt that was easily handled by Bravin.

Bravin made two more saves down the stretch to hold the 2-0 lead, and the final minute of the first half saw the team's third goal. It was Salas this time on a shot from 30-yards out. The sophomore dribbled through three defenders and sent a long shot that was misread by the keeper, ultimately bouncing over her head to make it 3-0 at the half.

The second half saw offensive pressure from both teams early, including three shots on goal by the Mountaineers that was handled by Rosenbaum. The Skyhawks saw scoring chances by Salazar and junior Taylor Rittman, but Western Colorado's Aubree Orosco collected a pair of saves to hold the score. Fort Lewis saw its final goal of the match in the 88th minute. Reyes initiated the play after intercepting a pass near midfield. She played it forward and through two Mountaineers defenders, finding Salas in the middle of the field. The sophomore forced the opposing keeper out of the box and beat her to the right to seal the 4-0 win.

Fort Lewis' match on Friday will begin at 1:00 p.m. from Dirks Field. Fans who are unable to attend the RMAC Tournament match can catch the action on the RMAC Network. More information about the RMAC Tournament, streaming, and ticketing can be found HERE.
