Skyhawks women's basketball drops Conference Crossover finale to ENMU

DURANGO, Colo. – A second-quarter surge was not enough to overtake Eastern New Mexico University as the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team fell in a 67-48 final to wrap up the homestand.

Fort Lewis dropped to 1-1 overall while Eastern New Mexico improved to 2-0 on the year.

The Skyhawks shot 31.6 (18-of-57) on the night compared to a 46.6 percent (27-of-58) efficiency for the Greyhounds. Eastern New Mexico converted 25 points off of turnovers while Fort Lewis dropped in 21. Neither team spent too much time at the free throw line with just 16 shots attempted on the night. Fort Lewis was outrebounded 41-31.

Junior Deniece Ryan led the team with 10 points, followed by junior Darla Hernandez at nine points and six rebounds. Senior Livia Knapp handed out six assists to go along with five rebounds.

Kingston was the first to score for Fort Lewis with a three-pointer off a dish from Knapp at the 7:57 mark. The Greyhounds responded with a three on the ensuing possession to make it a 7-3 score. Turnovers and missed shots plagued both teams over the next three minutes, but Eastern New Mexico managed to go on a scoring run to see a 10-point lead. The Skyhawks finally snapped the scoreless streak with a pull-up jumper from Ryan with under three minutes on the clock. Katie Lamb and Ryan combined for four points down the stretch to see a 17-9 deficit heading into the second quarter. The teams combined for 18 turnovers in the opening 10 minutes.

The Greyhounds began the second quarter with a jumper, followed by a three from Knapp for a 19-12 score. Fort Lewis would then enjoy a scoring run to pull within one point at 19-18. Kate Gallery went to the line with 6:49 on the clock and gave the Skyhawks their first lead of the night with a pair of made free throws, and the lead would swap sides several more times heading into the late portion of the quarter. Senior Samantha Wattawa brought the Skyhawks their largest lead of the contest with a three-pointer, assisted by Lamb, and it grew to four points with 1:25 to go. Eastern New Mexico responded late in the quarter, draining a three and driving for a layup to reclaim a 31-30 lead at half.

The third quarter is where the visitors found some separation, beginning with a layup 18 seconds into play. The next three minutes went scoreless before a layup from Trista Hoobler made it 33-32 in favor of Fort Lewis. The Greyhounds turned around and outscored the Skyhawks through the midway point to reclaim a lead. The advantage grew to as many as 13 points before a jumper from Darla Hernandez could slow the momentum. Despite the bucket by Fort Lewis, Eastern New Mexico ended the third with five straight points and led 55-39 after three quarters.

Hernandez gave Fort Lewis two more points at the 8:30 mark of the fourth quarter, followed by an Eastern New Mexico layup and a scoreless spell that carried into the final six minutes. Hernandez continued her efforts with another layup, bringing her to nine points, but the deficit grew to nearly 20 points with five minutes to go. The visitors knocked down another three after forcing a turnover, and Fort Lewis ended the quarter on a 5-0 run for a 67-48 score.
