Women's basketball loses road game after fourth quarter dominance from Grizzlies

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Skyhawks women's basketball came within two points in the fourth quarter, but a late surge by Adams State University resulted in a 79-60 final in road, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

With the loss, Fort Lewis fell to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Adams State improved to 7-5 on the year and 2-1 in the league.

Fort Lewis shot 34.4 percent (21-of-61) from the field compared to 52.6 percent (30-of-57) for Adams State. The Skyhawks knocked down seven three-pointers, including five in the third quarter, versus five total for the Grizzlies. Fort Lewis was outrebounded 36-26 and committed 22 turnovers.

Senior Livia Knapp led the team with 18 points, followed by junior Deniece Ryan with 15 points. Freshman Katie Lamb was the third player to reach double-digits with a 14-point, nine-rebound performance. Lamb added three assists and four steals—both team-highs—to her well-rounded outing.

Ryan sparked the offense with driving layups on the Skyhawks' opening possessions to see a 4-2 lead through two minutes. Turnovers and fouls began to pile up for Fort Lewis over the next two minutes to make it a 9-4 Adams State lead. Fort Lewis responded by drawing their own fouls and converting for four free throws by Hoobler and Lamb to make it 11-8. The Grizzlies added to the lead out of the first media break with five points before a layup from Hoobler slowed the momentum. The final few minutes featured an onslaught of three-pointers from Adams State to make it a 26-15 score at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter opened much like the first with a layup by Ryan, followed by an 8-0 Adams State run for a 34-17 score. Natalie Guanella added two more points at the stripe, and Hernandez got in on the scoring with a turnaround jumper to make it 36-21 at the 4:19 mark. The teams were scoreless for three minutes as the quarter ticked into the red zone before both teams managed to put away buckets for a 39-23 score. Lamb scored the first three-pointer of the night for Fort Lewis with 53 seconds remaining, and both teams ended the half at the free-throw line for a 46-28 Grizzly lead at halftime.

Fort Lewis tried to hang in with free throws in the third quarter and capitalized on a three by Lamb to make it 54-35. Adams State started to cool off from its 60 percent shooting night, and a deep three from Livia Knapp was followed up by another from Lamb for a 54-41 score. The difference was cut to nine points following a layup from freshman Claudia Palacio Gámez, and Ryan eventually made it a two-possession game with the team's fourth three-pointer. Knapp put the exclamation point on the third quarter with another three, bringing her point total to 16 and making it a 58-53 game with 10 minutes to go.

The Skyhawks continued to chip away, cutting the lead to four off a Lamb three-pointer and then two off the hand of Ryan. The Grizzlies responded with a 6-0 scoring run for a 66-58 score at the six-minute mark. The run continued into the two-minute mark with the home team building the lead back up to double-figures. The 16-2 scoring run brought the score to 76-60 with 1:28 to go, and the final moments added three more points for the home team to end it in a 79-60 score. Fort Lewis was outscored 21-7 in the fourth quarter.

Fort Lewis will play once more in the 2024 calendar year when they travel to Espanola, New Mexico, on Friday, December 20, for a rematch with Northern New Mexico College. The teams tip off at 4:00 p.m. The Skyhawks earned a 67-57 win over the Eagles on November 23 in Durango.
