Skyhawks magical run comes to a close in NCAA Quarterfinals

Fort Lewis eclipses 14 wins for 12th time in program history

PUEBLO, Colo. – The 2024 chapter of the Fort Lewis men's soccer team came to an end Saturday night as the No. 17 Skyhawks fell 1-0 to the No. 15 ThunderWolves on the road in the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Tournament National Quarterfinal and Super Region 4 Final in front of a crowd of 689 at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

Fort Lewis capped the year with a 14-4-6 overall record and 7-2-1 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play, with the Skyhawks advancing to at least the second round of the NCAA DII Men's Soccer Tournament in back-to-back seasons. CSU Pueblo moved up to 17-3-3.

"When you get close to the Final Four, you always want to put yourself in a good position, but we fell a little bit short," head coach David Oberholtzer commented. "Overall, it was a fantastic season for the guys. I'm really proud of all of our seniors for not just this year but their entire time with the program. They have elevated our program and put us in a great spot to have continued success moving forward."

The Pack pushed a consistent offensive attack throughout the match, taking an even eight shots in each half while placing ten total shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper and Honorable Mention All-RMAC honoree Lucas Martin stepped up and made nine saves, his second-most in a match this year.

A long throw-in in the 38th minute from Ignatius DeMark set up a dangerous situation inside the box. Jose Bustamante got a ThunerWolves body on the ball, but Dylan Zavatini streaked in from the front post for the punch-in goal from a yard out.

Fort Lewis nearly equalized with four seconds remaining in the half as Anton Hjalmarsson chipped a diving keeper from the right side of the 18-yard box, but the ball took a ThunderWolves bounce just off the crossbar.

The Skyhawks came out of the locker room with energy and began to control possession, but an untimely foul near the top of the box in the 62nd minute led to a red card issued to Jakob Larson after deliberation.

Larson and David Citron took the only shots on goal for the Skyhawks with CSU Pueblo's Ryan Nun picking up both saves. Fort Lewis managed just four shots in total.

CSU Pueblo wins the season record with a 2-1-1 mark against the Skyhawks after winning back-to-back matches at home.

Six Skyhawks played in their final collegiate soccer games including Adnan Elaqad, Jakob Larson, Thomas Kirkham, Luke Pope, and Gabriel Legendre.
