Third quarter surge leads Rangers to win over Skyhawks

DURANGO, Colo. – An explosive third quarter for Regis University led to a 76-65 final in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon, bringing Fort Lewis College's record to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Regis improved to 4-4 on the year and 2-0 in the league.

The Rangers outscored the Skyhawks 25-13 in the third quarter after a three-point separation at halftime, and Fort Lewis found late fight with an 18-14 edge in the fourth quarter. Fort Lewis took care of the ball well throughout the contest and recorded a season-low in turnovers with 11.

Fort Lewis shot over 40 percent for the fifth time this season, notching a 41.7 percent (25-of-60) mark for the game. Regis shot 43.5 percent (30-of-69) from the field and found its separation from three where they drained 13 shots compared to just five for Fort Lewis. The Rangers had a 40-37 advantage in rebounds.

Junior Deniece Ryan led the team with 15 points, followed by senior Livia Knapp with 13. Senior Darla Hernandez led all players with 11 rebounds. Regis had four players in double-figures, including Erin Fry with 18 points and 12 assists for a double-double.

The Rangers carried a 6-2 lead through the first two minutes of play before a run fueled by Ryan gave the Skyhawks a 9-8 lead. Regis quickly reclaimed the lead with a three-pointer, and Knapp followed it up with a jumper to tie the game at 11-all with 3:18 to go. Regis scored four more points to reclaim a lead, but the next minute saw scrappy play by the Skyhawks to tie it at 17-17. The Rangers had the upper hand late with a layup in the final seconds to carry a 19-17 lead into the second quarter.

The first minute of the second quarter featured a combined seven points to make it a 24-19 Regis lead before the next three minutes went scoreless. Sophomore Trista Hoobler and Ryan combined for a pair of layups at the six-minute mark to cut the difference to 27-23. Regis built the lead back to nine points, and Fort Lewis responded with a run to make it a one-possession game with 1:54 remaining. Regis knocked down another three, and Fort Lewis ended the half with a pair of free throws by Knapp for a 27-24 deficit.

Regis' commanding third quarter began with a 14-0 scoring run that spanned the opening five minutes, making it 51-34 before a layup from freshman Katie Lamb got Fort Lewis on the board. Lamb followed it up with a made three, and senior Samantha Wattawa capped off a surge with a tip-in layup for a 51-43 score. The Rangers closed out the quarter with three more three-pointers for a 62-47 lead after three quarters.

Hoobler cut into the difference in the first possession of the fourth quarter with a made three, followed by two more deep shots from Regis and a drained three by Eva Kingston for a 68-53 score. The Rangers' lead grew to 18 points before the Skyhawks started to chip away. Kingston scored after being credited with a steal at the 1:51 mark, and sophomore Natalie Guanella followed with a steal and layup for a 74-65 score. The final minute played out with just one more jumper by the Rangers to end the game in a 76-65 final.

Fort Lewis (3-5, 1-1 RMAC) is back for another weekday game next week as it welcomes New Mexico Highlands to Whalen Gym for a Tuesday evening conference match-up. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 7:30 p.m.

The Cowgirls are 4-4, 1-1 RMAC following a 74-73 overtime win over Colorado School of Mines this afternoon.
