Women's basketball falls in road decision to Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Skyhawks women's basketball team made the trip to Plachy Hall on Tuesday night, ultimately falling to the Grizzlies by an 87-61 final on the road.

Fort Lewis dropped to 11-12 overall and 8-9 in conference play while Adams State improved to 18-7 on the year and 13-4 in the league.

Fort Lewis shot 40 percent (20-of-50) from the field compared to a 50 percent (29-of-58) clip for Adams State. The Grizzlies were able to make 22 free throws versus 16 for the Skyhawks. Adams State held the edge on defense as well, outrebounding Fort Lewis by 18 and forcing 24 turnovers.

Senior Kelsey Sorenson led the team with 15 points, followed by junior Samantha Wattawa who recorded nine. Four players scored six points in the effort. Junior Avery Evans paced the squad with five rebounds while junior Sadie Misner came away with four steals.

The Grizzlies were the first to score after two minutes of play, but the narrow lead was quickly eliminated by Gallery who found an opening at the rim. The teams knotted up again at 4-4 before Adams State's first three-pointer dropped in at the 6:36 mark. Wattawa and Sorenson combined for points, but the Grizzlies maintained the lead. The final minute saw Fort Lewis pull within six points as play moved into the second quarter.

Wattawa got her team within three points early in the second quarter with a three-pointer, and free throws on both sides pushed the score to 21-16. Adams State went on to enjoy a six-point surge before a drive from Misner could slow the momentum with under six minutes on the clock. The Grizzlies grew the lead to 18 points, only slowed down when Evans converted both free throw chances at the two-minute warning. A last-second jumper fell for the Grizzlies as the home team entered the break leading by 22 points.

The Grizzlies continued to dominate out of the intermission, opening play on a 9-0 run before a three from Billy could get the Skyhawks on the board. Wattawa contributed three points after an and-one play to see the score at 59-30 with six minutes to go. The Skyhawks showed pulse midway through the quarter with a 13-0 scoring run that saw three-pointers from senior Ember Cervantes and junior Luisa Chavez to make it 64-43. Adams State responded with their own run before a buzzer-beater from Cervantes sent the teams into the fourth quarter in a 72-45 score.

Fort Lewis got off to a good start in the final quarter by scoring on back-to-back possessions and holding Adams State scoreless through three minutes. The Grizzlies finally broke through with a layup, but the Skyhawks answered with six points to make it 74-56. The following four minutes featured a 13-5 scoring run in favor of Adams State to extend the lead to 87-61 with one minute on the clock. The Skyhawks took two more shots down the stretch, but the 87-61 score held at the final buzzer.

Fort Lewis (11-12, 8-9 RMAC) will be home for a lone Saturday contest on February 17th. The team will face Western Colorado University for its annual Pink Game, presented by CommonSpirit, Alpine Bank, and the Wells Group. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of research on cancers affecting women.
