Slow start downs Skyhawks in 61-55 loss to Roadrunners

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team suffered from a slow start and never recovered in a 61-55 loss to MSU Denver on Saturday night.

The Skyhawks dropped to 11-10 overall and 8-7 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while the Roadrunners improved to 5-14 on the year and 4-10 in league play.

Fort Lewis was limited shooting just 30 percent (18-of-60) from the field—just shy of a season-low. MSU Denver recorded a field goal percentage of 35.6 (21-of-59). The Skyhawks held an advantage from beyond the arc with seven made threes versus four for the Roadrunners. MSU Denver's defense came away with 51 rebounds while Fort Lewis earned 33. The Skyhawks dished out 11 assists compared to eight for the Roadrunners.

Senior Kelsey Sorenson led the team with 13 points to go along with five steals and three assists. Junior Samantha Wattawa picked up her third double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Lanae Billy rounded out double-digit scorers for Fort Lewis with 10.

In a quarter that saw the Skyhawks shoot just 13 percent from the field, Sorenson got the team on the board at the 7:48 mark with a jumper. It would be three minutes before Fort Lewis scored again, this time on a made free throw from Wattawa to see the score at 6-3 in favor of MSU Denver. Sorenson added to her point total late in the quarter with a layup, but that would be the final bucket for Fort Lewis as the home team entered the second quarter down 10-5.

The Roadrunners added to their lead with a five-point scoring run before Billy knocked down her first three of the night at the 8:38 mark. The teams traded points with the Skyhawks seeing makes from three different players as time drifted under five minutes. Sophomore Kate Gallery cut the deficit to just four points after back-to-back made three-pointers, but MSU Denver went on to build it back up to eight points. Wattawa closed out the half at the charity stripe, making a pair for a 29-23 halftime score.

Wattawa kept her night going in the third quarter and got Fort Lewis on the board after three minutes of play. The Roadrunners followed it up with a made three and layup to make it a double-digit separation. MSU Denver went on to lead by as many as 12 points, but a late effort by Fort Lewis trimmed the lead to eight points heading into the final quarter of play.

The fourth began with MSU Denver free throws before a three-pointer from junior Sadie Misner made it a 47-40 game. Each time the Roadrunners extended the lead to double figures, the Skyhawks countered with made shots to stay in contention with under five to play. MSU Denver responded with a 6-0 scoring run, and that was enough to put the nail in the coffin on a 61-66 final.
