Women's lacrosse welcomes Mavericks and Griffins for home openers

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks women's lacrosse will make its home debut this week with a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games versus (RV) Colorado Mesa University and Westminster University.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis opened the season with an 18-8 neutral site loss to Concordia St. Paul in Colorado Springs. The Golden Bears held a 32-24 edge in shots, and the team's goalkeepers were even with seven saves apiece. CSP committed 16 turnovers compared to 14 for Fort Lewis, and the Skyhawks owned the advantage with 27 ground balls. The Skyhawks were 14-of-20 on clear attempts and 3-of-10 with free position shots.

Senior Ellie Martinez led the way with three goals, followed by five players who scored one apiece. Senior Haley Dostie led the team with two assists, followed by junior Mikki Brown and redshirt sophomore Valerie Garcia who each notched one. Sophomore Samantha Rodgers had a quality showing on defense with five ground balls, three caused turnovers, and one goal to her credit. Five players came away with three ground balls. Junior Caley Lay got the start at goalkeeper and collected seven saves.

Scouting (RV) Colorado Mesa University
The Mavericks sit at 0-2 on the year after an idle week. The team's most recent games resulted in a 9-3 loss to No. 6 Grand Valley State and an 18-8 loss to No. 12 Maryville. Colorado Mesa was 11-6 overall and 9-1 in conference play last season.

This season, the Mavericks have a shots on goal percentage of 67.6 and average 18.5 shots per game. They have 23 ground balls, 36 turnovers, and 19 draw controls. Seven players have scored goals, led by Caroline Ohngemach who has netted four this season. Justine Anderson leads the way with two assists. Larkin Daly and Kelsey Viger each have three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Shannon Murphy has played every minute at goalkeeper and owns a goals against average of 13.5.

Fort Lewis is 9-11 all-time against Colorado Mesa but has lost 11 straight. Last season, Fort Lewis opened the series with a 19-7 road loss before dropping a 10-8 decision at home.

Scouting Westminster University
The Griffins are winless in their 2024 campaign with road losses to No. 11 Embry Riddle and No. 10 Flager College. Westminster will face CSU Pueblo on Friday before heading to Durango for Sunday's matchup. Westminster was 5-8 overall and 4-6 in conference play last season.

This season, the Griffins have a shots on goal percentage of 85.2 and average 13.5 shots per game. They have 17 ground balls, 34 turnovers, and 25 draw controls. Three players have scored goals so far, led by Hannah Kelleher and Shaina Shoughro with three goals apiece. Maddie Kelleher has two assists and 11 draw controls to lead the team. Mariana Dick is the leader with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Gabriella Cheminant has been the primary goalkeeper and owns a goals against average of 19.43.

Fort Lewis leads the all-time series 9-4 with a 4-2 record when playing at home. The teams split the series last season, first with a Westminster home win. Fort Lewis earned a 14-13 home win with a late goal by Phoebe Ramirez.

Inside the Numbers
The Skyhawks have a shots on goal percentage of 62.5 with 15 shots on goal. The team owns 27 ground balls and six caused turnovers. Ellie Martinez is leading the team with three goals, followed by five players with one goal on the year. Samantha Rodgers is pacing the squad with five ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers. Caley Lay and Olivia Tilbury split time at goalkeeper and combined for a 28 percent saves mark.

Skyhawks are heading to warmer weather to play three spring break games against Young Harris College, Southern Wesleyan University, and Emmanuel University. When it's all said and done, the Skyhawks will have played five games in seven day.
