Skyhawks women’s lacrosse heads south for a trio of Spring Break games

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team is heading to warmer weather for three games against Young Harris College, Southern Wesleyan, and Emmanuel University.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks managed to play one game last week despite the snowfall and winter weather conditions in Durango. The team opened Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play against (RV) Colorado Mesa University and fell by a final score of 16-7.

The Mavericks owned a 37-22 edge in shots and a 23-17 advantage in shots on goal. Free position shots favored Colorado Mesa too, as the visitors earned 12 versus just two for Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks claimed 11 draw controls and came away with eight caused turnovers.

Senior Haley Dostie led the team with four goals, followed by Caprietta Abbadessa, Sydney Tannaci, and Phoebe Ramirez who each netted one. Junior Mikki Brown and Abbadessa each recorded two assists. Dostie led the way with seven draw controls while senior Ellie Martinez was credited with three. Sophomore Samantha Rodgers had two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Freshman Olivia Tilbury played 45 minutes at goalkeeper at made seven saves.

Scouting Young Harris College
The Mountain Lions are 3-5 on the year and 1-1 in Coastal Carolina Conference play. Young Harris earned a 21-15 win over Emmanuel University in its last contest on March 9. Young Harris was 6-11 in 2023.

As a team, Young Harris averages 13.7 goals per game and 29.1 shots per game. They own a shots percentage of 47.2 and a shots on goal percentage of 77.3. The Mountain Lions have accumulated 166 ground balls, 150 turnovers, 124 draw controls, and 61 caused turnovers.

Individually, Ella Hancock leads the team with 22 goals and 11 assists. Belle Hardwick follows with 22 goals and 10 assists while Ruthie Mandell is the leading assister with 14 thus far. Kinsley Purser leads the way with nine caused turnovers to go along with 20 draws and 13 ground balls. Three goalkeepers have seen time this season with Abbie Gallagher and Alyssa Rosenfeld splitting most of the duties. Gallagher leads the way with an 11.67 goals-against average and two wins.

Scouting Southern Wesleyan University
The Warriors are 1-8 on the year and 1-2 in Coastal Carolina Conference play following a 26-14 win over Lees-McRae last week. The team was 3-10 last season.

As a team, Southern Wesleyan averages 8.4 goals per game and 21.5 shots per game. They own a shots percentage of 39.2 and a shots on goal percentage of 74.7. The Warriors have accumulated 171 ground balls, 197 turnovers, 105 draw controls, and 94 caused turnovers.

Individually, Lauryn Esposito leads the team with 36 goals and seven assists. Taylor Byrd follows with 13 goals and 26 assists. Fianna Steves is the team's top defender with 29 ground balls, 25 caused turnovers, and 39 draws. Three goalkeepers have seen time this season, led by Kelsee McKay who has played in all nine games and averages 17.6 goals allowed per game.

Scouting Emmanuel University
The Lions are 7-3 on the year and 1-3 in Coastal Carolina Conference play following a road loss to Young Harris last week. Emmanuel is 6-2 at home this season. Emmanuel was 7-10 last season.

As a team, Emmanuel averages 17.1 goals per game and 34.6 shots per game. They own a shots percentage of 49.4 and a shots on goal percentage of 82.9. They have accumulated 147 ground balls, 166 turnovers, 197 draw controls, and 110 caused turnovers.

Individually, Paige Murphy leads the team with 60 goals and 25 assists. Lauren Kuschel follows with 33 goals and 24 assists while Kristie Fisher has 17 goals and 24 assists. Fisher leads the squad with 78 draws and 29 ground balls. Madison Pena is the team's leader with 20 caused turnovers to go along with 20 ground balls. Two goalkeepers have split time this season, led by Madison Duncan who has a goals against average of 9.5.

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis has totaled 15 goals through two goals and has a shot percentage of 32.6. The team averages 23 shots per game with a shots on goal percentage of 69.6. They have compiled 44 ground balls, 42 turnovers, 17 draws, and 14 caused turnovers.

Dostie leads the team with four goals to go along with an assist, followed by Martinez who has three goals. Junior Mikki Brown leads the way with three assists while Abbadessa and Garcia each have two. Rodgers has seven ground balls and five caused turnovers to pace the squad. Caley Lay and Tilbury have split time at goalkeeper, and Tilbury leads the way with 13 saves and a saves percentage of 29.2.

After the trip, Fort Lewis will head back into conference play with a road contest against
UCCS. The game will be on Thursday, March 28 with a start time of 4:00 p.m. from Mountain Lion Stadium.
