Price scores first career goals in road loss to Young Harris College

Box Score YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Freshman Piper Price scored a pair of goals on Tuesday, the first of her career, in a 23-11 loss to Young Harris College in women's lacrosse's spring break opener.

Fort Lewis fell to 0-3 overall while Young Harris improved to 4-5 on the year.

The Mountain Lions took advantage of a 49-23 shots margin, including a 37-15 edge in shots on goal. Young Harris came away with 26 ground balls compared to 19 for Fort Lewis.

Senior Caprietta Abbadessa led the team with four goals, followed by junior Mikki Brown and Price who each had two. Senior Ellie Martinez had one goal and the lone assist for the Skyhawks. The sophomore duo of Sydney Tannaci and Samantha Rodgers combined for eight ground balls and a caused turnovers while senior Autumn Rymerson was responsible for three ground balls and one caused turnover. Junior Caley Lay made a career-high 14 saves at goalkeeper.

The Mountain Lions took a quick lead on their opening possession before doubling it up one minute into play. Senior Kaylin Vanzant won the next draw, and Abbadessa made quick work to cut into the deficit with her third goal of the season to make it 2-1. The teams traded draws and goals from there with the margin remaining at one goal. After a hot start to the game's first five minutes, the teams cooled off a bucked down defensively. The Skyhawks would see another goal, this one off a free position shot from Brown, to move the score to 4-3. Lay went on to make two saves down the stretch in a quarter that ended in 6-3 favor of Young Harris.

Lay carried over her goalkeeping standards into the second quarter where she made two quick saves through 90 seconds of clock. Young Harris was the first to score, but Fort Lewis found an immediate response thanks to Abbadessa's second goal of the afternoon. Then, freshman Piper Price found her shining moment with her first career goal, assisted by Martinez, to see a 7-5 score. Rodgers and the Skyhawks' defense worked to maintain the score with caused turnovers and continued pressure, holding the Mountain Lions off the scoreboard until the five-minute mark. After the home team's goal, Price and Brown combined for two free position goals to make it a one-goal difference heading into the final two minutes of the half. Young Harris had the final say in the quarter, netting three quick goals to carry an 11-7 lead into halftime.

Out of the break, Young Harris added two goals to its total before Abbadessa's third of the game made it 13-8. The Mountain Lions continued to hold the ball in their offensive third and benefited greatly, adding another two goals before the clock ticked under 10 minutes. The home team extended its lead through the midway point of the third quarter, slowed only by Abbadessa's fourth goal to bring the score to 17-9. The Mountain Lions closed the quarter on a four-goal scoring run to carry a 21-9 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.

The Skyhawks got off to a better start in the fourth quarter, earning the opening draw thanks to Autumn Rymerson. Despite the swing in momentum, the Mountain Lions took advantage of a Fort Lewis yellow card to score their 22nd goal of the outing. Fort Lewis finally broke through at the 9:22 mark with a free position goal from Martinez—her fourth of the year—which led into back-and-forth play as the clock ticked under five minutes. Fort Lewis was able to score once more with seconds remaining in the game, this one coming from Haley Dostie, to end the game in a 23-11 score.
