Women's lacrosse opens season with neutral site game against Golden Bears

DURANGO, Colo. – The long-awaited season opener for the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team is almost upon us as the Skyhawks gear up for Friday matchup against Concordia St. Paul, playing on the campus of UCCS.

Looking Back
The Skyhawks ended the 2023 campaign with an overall record of 3-10 and a 3-7 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The team earned wins over CSU Pueblo and Westminster University throughout the season. The Skyhawks tallied 121 goals in 13 games, averaging 24.2 shots per game. Haley Dostie led the team with 45 goals, followed by Ellie Martinez and Kaylin Vanzant who had 15 and 12, respectively. Samantha Rodgers led the team with 20 caused turnovers and ranked second with 25 ground balls.

Five players were named to All-RMAC teams, headlined by then-junior Dostie and Rebecca Kiyokawa on the Second Team. Avery Basso, Makena Carter, and then-freshman Samantha Rodgers were named as Honorable Mention picks. The team also had 10 members named to All-Academic teams, led by Basso and Kiyokawa who made the First Team.

Scouting Concordia St. Paul
The Golden Bears 2-3 on the year with wins over Lewis (13-8) and McKendree (12-3). Last season, CSP had a 6-10 record and a 2-4 mark in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. Fort Lewis has faced CSP once, a 15-7 loss on March 9, 2-19.

As a team, the Golden Bears have compiled 51 goals and average 24 shots per game. They have a shots on goal percentage of 72.5. Susie Monson leads all players with 11 goals to go along with five assists. Four additional players have six or more goals on the year. Hailey Hartlage leads the team with six assists. Goalkeeper Marge Lucio has played and started in all five games and owns an 11.79 goals-against average. She has 37 saves and leads the team with 19 ground balls. Claire Flahaven has a team-best 20-caused turnovers.

Around the RMAC
No. 8 Regis, the preseason favorite in the conference title race, leads the way with a 2-0 record. UCCS follows at 1-1 while No. 25 Colorado Mesa (0-2) and CSU Pueblo (0-1) are both winless. Regis leads the league by averaging 17.5 goals per game, followed by UCCS at 12 per game. CSU Pueblo's goals-against average of 11 is the best in the conference. Individually, Shea Murphy from Regis is leading all played with five goals per game.

Fort Lewis will make its home debut next week with games against Colorado Mesa and Westminster University. Friday's game against the Mavericks will be a 3:00 p.m. draw from Ray Dennison Memorial Field while Sunday's contest versus the Griffins is slated for 1:00 p.m.
