Women’s lacrosse continues conference schedule on the road, faces Mavericks and Griffins

DURANGO, Colo. – After a hard-fought home win on Saturday, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team is heading on the road for rematches with Colorado Mesa University and Westminster University.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks faced off against CSU Pueblo in blizzard conditions on Saturday and ran away with an incredible 10-9 comeback win. Senior Ellie Martinez was the hero thanks to a go-ahead game-winner in the final minute to secure the victory.

Fort Lewis held a 37-23 edge in shots and a 25-19 advantage in shots on goal. The teams were even with 33 ground balls apiece while the Skyhawks saw a 13-9 lead in draw controls. The Pack committed 33 turnovers—18 of which were caused by the Skyhawks.

Seniors Caprietta Abbadessa and Autumn Rymerson led the team with four goals and three goals, respectively. Junior Mikki Brown, freshman Piper Price, and Martinez each added one goal while Martinez was the team leader with two assists. Brown paced the squad with six draws.

Sophomore Samantha Rodgers led the way with eight ground balls and five caused turnovers, followed by graduate student JoJo Lutz who had six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Junior Caley Lay earned her second win over the season with eight saves and just two goals allowed.

Rodgers Named RMAC Defensive Player of the Week
For the first time in her career, sophomore Samantha Rodgers has been named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the league on Monday.

Rodgers, an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection in 2023, has upped her game in year two. In last week's win over CSU Pueblo, she earned career-highs in ground balls (8) and caused turnovers (5) to guide the Skyhawks to a key victory. Rodgers and the rest of the defensive unit held the ThunderWolves to just two goals in the final 30 minutes to capture an exhilarating 10-9 win at home.

Through nine games, the sophomore has 33 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers to go along with a goal and assist. Her 3.67 ground balls per game ranked second in the conference while her 2.0 caused turnovers per game is third among all league players.

Scouting Colorado Mesa University
The Mavericks are 5-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play following a 15-11 win over UCCS last week. Each of the team's losses this season has come from nationally ranked teams (#6 Grand Valley, #8 Regis, #12 UIndy, #12 Maryville). Through nine games, the Mavericks have 98 goals, 46 assists, and own a shots-on-goal percentage of 67.3. Defensively, they have 92 caused turnovers, 173 ground balls, and hold the opposition to an 82.4 clear percentage.

Justine Anderson leads the team with 28 goals, followed by Carson Dickey (16) and Caroline Ohngemach (11). Courtney Havel is the leader with nine assists. On defense, Kelsey Viger is pacing the squad with 30 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers. Shannon Murphy has played every minute between the pipes and owns a 10.89 goals against average with 67 saves to her credit.

When the teams met in the conference opener, it was Colorado Mesa who came away with a 16-7 win. The Mavericks have the upper hand in the series history with a 12-9 edge. Fort Lewis has lost 12 straight against Colorado Mesa.

Scouting Westminster University
The Griffins are 3-5 on the year and 3-2 in conference play following a split last week. Westminster started the week with a 9-8 win over UCCS before dropping a 17-12 game to Regis. Through eight games, Westminster has 65 goals and 20 assists with a shots on goal percentage of 75.8. The team has totaled 132 ground balls, 63 caused turnovers, and 87 draw controls.

Individually, Shaina Shoughro leads the way with 16 goals, followed by Hannah Kelleher and Jordan Williamson who each have nine. Five players have double-digit ground balls, led by Marianna Dick at 16. Gabriella Cheminant has played the majority of the minutes at goalkeeper and owns a 12.27 goals against average with 79 saves.

The Griffins captured a 13-7 win over the Skyhawks when the teams faced in late March thanks to a dominant second half. Despite the loss, Fort Lewis leads the all-time series 9-5.

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis has 89 goals and 36 assists this season. The team averages 25.2 shots per game on a 73.6 shots-on-goal percentage. 24 goals come via free positions and 53 have been unassisted. The Skyhawks have totaled 235 ground balls, 100 caused turnovers, and 92 draw controls. The draw has been a point of contention so far as the opposition boasts 157 total draws.

Senior Caprietta Abbadessa leads the teams in scoring with 21 goals. Senior Haley Dostie follows with 12 goals and six assists but sustained a season-ending injury last week. Junior Mikki Brown leads all players with seven assists so far. Sophomore Samantha Rodgers leads the way defensively with 33 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers. Three additional players had double-digit caused turnovers, including sophomore Sydney Tannaci (14) and seniors JoJo Lutz (14) and Ellie Martinez (12). Goalkeepers Caley Lay and Olivia Tilbury have split time this season, combining for 84 saves and a 14.56 goals per game average.
