Women’s lacrosse travels to Pueblo for final road game

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team will look for the season sweep of CSU Pueblo on Saturday in its final road game of the season.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks struggled on the road last week, falling to Colorado Mesa (17-6) and Westminster (12-8). In the opener against Colorado Mesa, the Mavericks benefitted from a dominant margin on the draw with 22 compared to just five for the Skyhawks. Colorado Mesa outshot Fort Lewis 39-22, including a 28-10 edge in shots on goal. The teams were even with 11 caused turnovers apiece.

Junior Mikki Brown led the team with three goals and an assist, followed by Kaylin Vanzant, Ellie Martinez, and Phoebe Ramirez who each scored one goal. Sophomore Samantha Rodgers continued her dominance on defense with five caused turnovers and four ground balls. Sophomore Sydney Tannaci added four ground balls, followed by graduate student JoJo Lutz who contributed three. Junior Caley Lay played 45 minutes at goalkeeper and collected nine saves and four ground balls.

The team closed out the trip in Salt Lake City and suffered a 12-8 loss after being outscored 6-1 in the fourth quarter at the hands of Westminster University. Westminster outshot Fort Lewis 27-21 on the afternoon, including a 24-15 edge in shots on goal. The Griffins held an advantage in most statistical categories, including ground balls (29-20) and draw controls (10-7).

Senior Autumn Rymerson led the team with two goals while six players contributed one apiece. Sophomore Samantha Rodgers led the way with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior Mikki Brown earned five draws to go along with a caused turnover. Junior Caley Lay went the distance at goalkeeper and netted 12 saves.

Scouting CSU Pueblo
The Pack is 2-9 on the year and 0-7 in conference play. The team is riding a seven-game losing streak after falling to Westminster (12-7) and Colorado Mesa (16-3) last week. CSU Pueblo has 93 goals and 41 assists on the year. They have racked up 236 ground balls, 124 draw controls, and 96 caused turnovers. The team has a clear percentage of 68.5 and averages 24.4 turnovers per game.

Five players have double-digit goals, led by Elise Magee at 20 goals and 12 assists. Caira Lessick follows with 18 goals but has not played since March. Baylee Mee leads all players with 45 draw controls and 13 caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Breonna Mason has a goals against average of 12.53 with 119 saves. Mason leads the team with 41 ground balls.

Fort Lewis defeated CSU Pueblo when the teams met two weeks ago thank to a late goal to make it 10-9. The Skyhawks are 17-2 all-time against the Pack and have won seven in a row. Fort Lewis is 6-2 when playing on CSU Pueblo's home field.

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis has 103 goals and 40 assists this season. The team averages 24.5 shots per game on a 71.1 shots-on-goal percentage. 29 goals have come via free positions and 63 have been unassisted. The Skyhawks have totaled 284 ground balls, 123 caused turnovers, and 104 draw controls. The draw has been a point of contention so far as the opposition boasts 189 total draws.
 
Senior Caprietta Abbadessa leads the teams in scoring with 21 goals. Senior Haley Dostie follows with 12 goals and six assists but sustained a season-ending injury two weeks ago. Junior Mikki Brown leads all players with eight assists so far. Sophomore Samantha Rodgers leads the way defensively with 42 ground balls and 26 caused turnovers. Three additional players had double-digit caused turnovers, including sophomore Sydney Tannaci (17) and seniors JoJo Lutz (16) and Ellie Martinez (12). Goalkeepers Caley Lay and Olivia Tilbury have split time this season, combining for 107 saves and a 14.55 goals per game average.

Fort Lewis (2-9, 1-6 RMAC) will return home for its final games of the regular-season next week. The Skyhawks welcome Regis University to Ray Dennison Memorial Field on Friday for a 1:00 p.m. start, followed by the finale on Sunday against UCCS at 1:00 p.m.
