GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College outdoor track teams got off to a hot start at the 2024 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, sending three through to the finals and picking up personal bests from a multitude of competitors.

The day kicked off with the women's 1500m prelims which saw a loaded field toe the line in two heats. Senior Katie Heck competed in heat two, placing fourth with a time of 4:27.36. Heck was one of five athletes to post a track record time, and she will advance to the finals on Sunday at 12:50 p.m. It was the men's 1500m prelims up next which saw juniors Brady Burrough and Conner Dosmann toe the line. Burrough finished with a time of 3:53.61 in heat one, placing fourth and advancing to the finals on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Dosmann placed fifth in heat two with a time of 3:55.44 and joins Burrough in Sunday's finals. The top four times from each heat, and the next four best times, advance to the finals.

The women's 400m was next on the docket for Fort Lewis, and sophomore Josie Coulter was the team's top finisher with an 18th-place time of 59.66. Coulter's time established a new personal best. Senior Aubrey Swindle followed in 22nd place with a time of 1:02.66. Freshman Zachary Gaumont made his debut in the men's 100m prelims and narrowly missed the finals after a ninth place finish and a time of 10.71. The women's 400m hurdles followed, and freshman Hazel McBride wrapped up her season by placing 22nd with a time of 1:12.79.

The women's 10k capped off the evening, and junior Hannah Hartwell was poised for a strong outing. Hartwell was leading the pack midway through the race, but lightning was detected within a specific radius and the race was stopped. After a lengthy delay, race coordinators determined that the race would start at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. Sophomore Mikenna Hoffman is also competing in the 10k and was in the mix at the time of delay.

The women's 10k will kick things off for Fort Lewis on Saturday, followed by the men's and women's 800m prelims beginning at 5:10 p.m. The women's 3000m Steeple closes out the day at 6:45 p.m.
