Skyhawks claim two All-American honors, Burrough advances in mile on day one of NCAAs

3/13/2026 6:43:00 PM

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Senior Hannah Hartwell and the women's distance medley relay team highlighted day one of the NCAA Division II National Championships with All-American honors, while senior Brady Burrough advanced to the finals of the men's mile following a dramatic sequence of events.

The day began with a chaotic men's mile, as both heats featured pushing and shoving that led to multiple stumbles. Burrough was among those affected, falling in the final straightaway after an opposing runner clipped his trail leg. At the time of the incident, Burrough was running around fifth place and appeared well-positioned to qualify. Following the race, the Skyhawks coaching staff filed a protest, and officials granted Burrough entry into the finals based on his positioning at the time of the fall. He was ultimately listed 13th overall in the prelims with a time of 4:10.12.

Next, freshman Eliana Angelino competed in the women's 800m, one of three freshmen in the 18-athlete field. Angelino placed 11th overall with a time of 2:10.46, finishing three spots shy of qualifying for the final in her first NCAA Division II Championship appearance.

Hartwell followed in the women's 5000m as one of nine runners from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in the 18-athlete field. She held second place through 2200m before gradually sliding back in the standings. Hartwell remained in ninth entering the final lap but was passed in the closing stages by a Mines runner, ultimately finishing 10th in 16:37.40 to earn Second Team All-American honors.

The women's distance medley relay closed out the day for Fort Lewis. The team of Angelino, Caroline Laughlin, Janaya Mancell, and Alliyah Molina earned the program's second Second Team All-American honor of the day, placing 10th with a time of 11:52.77.

Day two of the championships begins at 2:40 p.m. for Fort Lewis with Burrough competing in the men's mile final, followed by Hartwell in the women's 3000m at 4:25 p.m.
