Women's lacrosse season comes to an end in loss to UCCS

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team concluded its 2024 campaign on Sunday with a 12-7 loss to UCCS at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.

Fort Lewis closed out the season with a 3-11 overall record and a 2-8 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while UCCS improved to 7-8 on the year and 5-5 in league play.

The Mountain Lions outshot the Skyhawks 34-21 on the day, including a 23-17 advantage in shots on goal. Fort Lewis was 19-of-24 on clears compared to a 21-of-23 mark for UCCS. The teams combined for 21 saves and 33 ground balls.

Senior Ellie Martinez led the team with three goals, followed by seniors Autumn Rymerson and Caprietta Abbadessa, junior Mikki Brown, and redshirt sophomore Valerie Garcia who each scored one. Brown led the team with two assists. Sophomore Samantha Rodgers led the way with four ground balls and two caused turnovers while graduate student JoJo Lutz added three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior Caley Lay had seven saves at goalkeeper.

Martinez opened the game with a goal off the feed from Brown to give Fort Lewis an early lead. That score held for the next eight minutes with both sides suffering from fouls and cards. The Mountain Lions eventually scored the equalizer at the six-minute mark and added the go-ahead one minute later. The final three minutes saw a goal from Abbadessa and a late UCCS score to give the visitors a 3-2 lead after one quarter.

The Skyhawks scored their third goal of the game 30 seconds into the second quarter thanks to Brown, but the Mountain Lions countered on their following possession to reclaim the lead. UCCS ended the second quarter on a 4-0 scoring run to carry an 8-3 lead into halftime.

Fort Lewis opened the third quarter with a quick shot from Martinez, followed by a goal by Rymerson to make it 8-4. Lay followed with a pair of saves along with a caused turnover by Lutz to give the Skyhawks possession. Martinez capitalized on the favorable field position for her second goal of the game to make it 8-5. Lay ended the quarter with another save to send the teams into the fourth quarter.

An early green card in the fourth quarter led to a woman-up goal for UCCS, extending the lead to four goals. The teams traded goals over the following six minutes, capped off by a Martinez goal to see an 11-7 score with seven minutes remaining. That score held until the final 30 seconds of play when the Mountain Lions sealed the deal to make it a 12-7 final.
