Historic rushing performance keys Cardinals victory over Skyhawks

DURANGO, Colo. – Redshirt freshman Stone Walker threw for 141 yards and rushed for another 160 yards on the ground with two trips to the endzone in Fort Lewis College's 35-20 loss to William Jewell College in the 2024 season opener up on Ray Dennison Memorial Field.

Today's performance makes Walker the first Skyhawk to rush for more than 150 yards in a game since 2021 and record two rushing touchdowns since 2018, all while leading the Skyhawks to its first game with over 200 rushing yards since 2018.

It was all Keaundre McCullough this afternoon, however, as the five-foot-ten redshirt freshman out of Belzoni, Mississippi, rushed for 402 yards and five touchdowns on 25 attempts to shatter the school records for single-game rushing yards and touchdowns and finish 23 yards shy of the NCAA Division II record.

Despite the ground game, Fort Lewis made strives defensively earning three turnovers in favor of the blue and gold compared to seven total turnovers across the entire 2023 season. Jonathan Stewart and Christopher Ponce each recorded a fumble recovery while Trenton Sullivan picked up the first interception of his career and paired it with a 20-yard return. Most notably, the Skyhawks held true freshman Cameron Vanzant to only 75 yards through the air and zero touchdowns on eight completions in fifteen attempts marking the first time since 2019 that FLC has limited its opponent to under 100 passing yards.

William Jewell secured the first score of the season with a four-yard scamper from McCullough, but the Skyhawks responded with a steady seven-play, 84-yard drive capped with a 26-yard field goal from Hunter Villavicencio. Villavicencio later added a 40-yard field goal in the third quarter before Walker later punched in a five-yard rushing score of his own following Sullivan's interception to pull Fort Lewis into a one-score game, 28-20 with 18:23 left to play in favor of the Cardinals.

Although Fort Lewis showed grit in the second half, forcing the interception, a turnover on downs, and a fumble, the Skyhawks ultimately stalled out with a turnover-on-downs just eight yards shy of William Jewell's end zone resulting in a 93-yard rushing score of McCullough that ultimately sealed the game.

Jamal Johnson, who utilized a medical redshirt last season, made a strong impression in his collegiate debut as the five-foot-nine running back out of Thunder Mountain High School in Juneau, Alaska, went for 51 rushing yards on only nine attempts. Jacob Penney, the Skyhawks leading tackler last year, picked up right where he left off with nine solo tackles on the afternoon including three tackles for seven combined yards of loss.

Overall, Fort Lewis produced 374 yards of total offense on the back of Stone's dual-threat performance but also handed over 94 yards in eleven penalties.
