Walker leads Skyhawks to first win over Arizona Christian; nation’s longest active losing streak comes to an end

Fort Lewis earns first win since Oct. 5, 2019

DURANGO, Colo. – Stone Walker threw for 124 yards and one touchdown and rushed for another 57 yards and a score to lead the Fort Lewis football team to its first win in over five years in a 17-12 victory over Arizona Christian capping the nation's longest active losing streak in college football at 40 games.

Fort Lewis climbs to 1-1 to start the season for the first time since 2019 while Arizona Christian (0-1) falls in its season opener for the third consecutive season.

"We knew that Arizona Christian was a quality opponent, and we felt like we could be victorious, but this was a hard-fought game. We paid full price for this victory," head coach Johnny Cox shared post-game. "They are a good opponent. It was a lot of what we've been trying to build into this program that came out today as far as sticking together, playing as a family, forgiving ourselves for our mistakes, sticking to the plan, and persevering: all of those things were tested today. I'm just so excited that this group of seniors and everyone else on the team can finally say we did it."

The Skyhawks offense steadily marched downfield all afternoon to lead in both total time of possession 32:44 to 27:16 and in total offense 291 yards against the Firestorms' 239. In addition, Fort Lewis converted on seven of its 14 third-down attempts (50.0 percent), converted on its only fourth-down try, and scored on three of its four trips to the end zone. Notably, FLC found continued success on the ground thanks to Jamal Johnson, who matched Stone with 57 yards on 10 carries, and Cameron Mack, who added another 24 yards on seven carries.

AJ Sibley was the lead back for Arizona Christian with 67 yards on 12 attempts, but it was Chase Tompkins who rushed for both of ACU's touchdowns and 25 yards on seven attempts. The Skyhawks offense once again held its opposing quarterback in check, limiting Johnny Johnson to only 111 yards on 11 completions in 22 attempts (50.0 percent) while also being sacked thrice; 1.5 sacks of which came from senior linebacker Jack Hanenburg who finished the day with seven total tackles including 2.5 tackles for a combined 12 yards lost.

Walker showed steady improvements through the air from week zero completing 12 of his 20 passing attempts (60.0 percent) while taking only one sack. Jamille Humphrey led all FLC receivers with 54 yards on three receptions while Christopher Thomas Jr. added 40 yards on four receptions and hauled in Stone's first collegiate passing touchdown after an ankle-breaking move off the line left him with plenty of space for the easy touchdown.

Jacob Penney had a career day leading the Fort Lewis defense as the redshirt sophomore out of Sparks, Nevada, racked up a game-high 14 total tackles including six solo, eight assisted, and a tackle for loss. Walter Stauffer added six tackles and half a sack while Trenton Sullivan provided the final sack for a loss of 12 yards. In addition, Skyhawks defenders broke up two passes and recorded four quarterback hurries.
