Skyhawks travel to Texas for matches versus Mustangs and Falcons

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks women's soccer is back in Texas this week for games against Midwestern State University and UT Permian Basin with hopes of extending their unbeaten streak.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis was 1-0-1 last week with a 1-1 tie against Lubbock Christian and a 3-0 win over Eastern New Mexico. In the tie, sophomore Ashlyn Salas was the hero after netting the equalizer in the 85th minute. Fort Lewis outshot Lubbock Christian 18-11 for the match, including a 9-7 lead in shots on goal. The teams combined for 14 fouls and each received one yellow card. Salas scored the team's lone goal, bringing her career total to three, while sophomore Abila Tapia was credited with her first career assist on the play. Senior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein recorded nine shots (four SOG), followed by senior Sabrina Reyes and Salas who each had four shots. The fifth-year goalkeeping duo of Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for six saves.

Two days later, the Skyhawks earned their first win of the season in 3-0 fashion over the Greyhounds in Portales, N.M. The Skyhawks dominated offensively with 22 shots compared to just three for the Greyhounds. The Lewis played to five corners and held ENMU to one. Goalkeepers Katlyn Rosenbaum and Riley Bravin combined for their first shutout of the season, each collecting one save. Seniors Gabi Meraz-Fishbein and Danielle Gonzales were the first to score, followed by sophomore Abila Tapia who netted that match's fourth goal. Junior Josie Coulter and sophomore Haley Stafford each dished out an assist.

Scouting (RV) Midwestern State
The Mustangs carry a 2-0 record into Thursday's match after claiming wins over Western Colorado (6-1) and Central Oklahoma (3-1) last week. The weekend sweep has Midwestern State receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll. The team was 10-5-5 last season with a 6-3-3 record in Lone Star Conference play and was 5-1-3 at home.

Following the successful openers at home, Cassidy Savoy was named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week. She scored three goals and tacked on two assists to lead all players. She is followed by two players who netted a pair of goals over the weekend. Allison Dellis played all 180 minutes at goalkeeper and collected 11 saves while allowing two goals. As a team, the Mustangs are averaging 23 shots and 12 shots on goal per game.

Fort Lewis leads the all-time series 6-4-3 after last season's 3-0 neutral site win. The series is tied 2-2 when playing in Wichita Falls. In last season's win, Anika Scherer, Rylee Rustad, and Sabrina Reyes were responsible for the goals.

Scouting UT Permian Basin
The Falcons are 1-0-1 after a tie against Our Lady of the Lake University and a win over Texas Wesleyan University last week. UTPB was 4-7-6 in 2023 with a 2-5-5 LSC record and a mark of 3-2-2 at home. They are averaging 22 shots per game compared to three per game from their opponents. The Falcons have placed 24 shots on goal and are averaging one goal per game.

Individually, Ilaya Pata and Cassandra Ramirez lead the team with one goal apiece while Lara Brewis has an assist. Sophie Dionissiou paces the squad with four shots on goal. The starting goalkeeper has been Valeria Delgado, and she has played 135 minutes with an unblemished saves percentage.

Fort Lewis had a 2-0 record in the series history, including a 1-0 record on the road. The teams last faced in 2021 when the Skyhawks ran away with a 5-0 home win. Fort Lewis has not surrendered a goal in the series history. Gonzales and Reyes each had an assist in the most recent win.

Around the RMAC
The league has four teams ranked or receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll. Colorado School of Mines took a huge jump from #20 to #6 following wins over San Francisco State and Chico State last week. Colorado Mesa fell from #11 to #18 after a tie against Chaminade and win over Northwest Nazarene. UCCS is receiving votes after a challenging, two-loss weekend versus Western Oregon and Western Washington. MSU Denver is the final team receiving votes following scoreless ties against Western Oregon and Western Washington.

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis is averaging two goals per game while holding its opponents to .50 per game. They average 20 shots per game compared to seven on the other side. The team has four goals from four different players to go along with three assists. Tapia leads the way so far with one goal and an assist. Meraz-Fishbein has one game-winning goal and leads the team with five shots on goal. She also leads the team with 165 minutes played, followed by junior Rachel Peebles at 157 minutes. Bravin and Rosenbaum have combined for eight saves and a saves percentage of 88.9.

Fort Lewis will end its nonconference slate in Texas yet again, this time traveling to Canyon to face West Texas A&M on Sunday, September 22. Kickoff is set for noon from The Pitch. The Buffs are 1-0 this season after a 4-2 win over Western Colorado last week. They will face Adams State, No. 6 Mines, and New Mexico Highlands prior to next Sunday's match.
