Penney tabbed RMAC Week Two Defensive Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Recognized for his individual efforts that led Fort Lewis (1-1) to a first-half shutout and ultimately a 17-12 victory over Arizona Christian (0-1) to snap college football's longest-active losing streak at 40 games, redshirt sophomore Jacob Penney has been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Week Two Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Penney, a graduate of Spanish Springs High School in Sparks, Nevada, earns his first career Player of the Week honor and the first defensive weekly award for the Skyhawks since Blayke De La Rosa back on Sep. 23, 2019.

Fort Lewis' defense stepped up big this week, limiting the Firestorm offense to only 239 yards of total offense by way of 128 yards rushing and 111 yards through the air. The Skyhawks held Arizona Christian to 6-of-14 on third downs (42.9 percent) and 0-for-2 on two-point attempts. In addition, ACU was held scoreless and to only 77 yards in the first half.

Penney, the second Skyhawk to don the number zero, had a career-high performance against the Firestorm with 14.0 total tackles including six solo and eight assisted tackles. He also recorded 1.0 tackles for three yards lost. Penney previously recorded a career-high 11.0 tackles in the 2023 season finale against No. 1/1 Colorado School of Mines (14-1).

The Skyhawks open RMAC play this weekend with a road trip to Black Hills State (1-1). FLC and BHSU are scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff at Lyle Hare Stadium on Saturday, Sep. 21.
