GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Scorching heat and gusty winds proved no problem for Sarah Grenemyer as the sophomore resides in a tie for second following the first round of the Ruidoso Junior Golf Association's Shootout at Estrella over at the Golf Club of Estrella.

Fort Lewis shot a combined 320 through its opening round to finish 32 strokes over par and 12 strokes back from the lead. CSU Pueblo, Academy of Art, MSU Denver, and Lubbock Christian forced a four-way tie for first place with each squad finishing with a 20-over, 308 team total.

Point Loma Nazarene's Kiara Hernandez headlines the individual scoreboard after the junior from Burbank, California, was the only player in the tournament to finish below par in the first round. Hernandez owns a two-stroke lead with a one-under 71.

Grenemyer kicked off her front nine with back-to-back bogies but was able to birdie on holes three and seven to offset the pair and finish one-over-par on the front. After four consecutive pars to open up the back nine, Grenemyer then birdied out on holes 14 and 15 before a double bogey on hole 17 kept her behind Hernandez.

Dimery Plewe is the second Skyhawk up on the leaderboard as the freshman sits in a tie for 47th with a nine-over, 81. The trio of Vivianna Holguin, Isabel Bustillos, and Peyton Gibby each shot an identical 83 to stand 11 strokes above par and in a tie for 58th. Annika Gutierrez, who is competing as an unattached individual, finished in 81st with a 90 (+18).

Round two will tee off with a shotgun start tomorrow morning, Sep. 17, at 8:30 a.m. MST.
