Game Recap: Football | | Hayden Mangan, Assistant AD-Communications & Fan Engagement

Skyhawks offense posts best game since 2019, comes up short-handed against Hardrockers

Gaumont goes for a career-high two touchdowns

DURANGO, Colo. – Stone Walker paved the way with 221 yards of total offense, Orlando Guevara rushed for 100 yards and one score on the ground, and Zachary Gaumont added another 117 yards and two touchdowns as the Fort Lewis fell to 1-3 on the season and 0-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon in a 49-33 loss to South Dakota Mines (3-2, 2-1 RMAC).

In summery conditions up on the rim, the Fort Lewis offense racked up 444 total yards, its first 400-yard outing since Nov. 13, 2021, but was still narrowly edged by the Hardrockers who ran up 484 yards of total offense on four additional plays. In addition, the Skyhawks 33 points is its first 30-point performance since Sep. 21, 2019.

"Like I told the team, these hurt more than last year because they're full games, the effort is there, the execution at times is there, but you can't turn the ball over, and you can't have drops," head coach Johnny Cox shared. "You have to be sight and sound defensively early in the game. Now, we're into things that we can control. We have to continue to play and execute at a higher level so we don't have this feeling again. We'll find a way to get better from this and get back to it as soon as possible."

Walker went 20-for-42 (47.6 percent) through the air for 210 yards and a pair of touchdowns caught by Gaumont, who eclipsed 100+ receiving yards for the second time in his career with 117 while also notching his first-career two-touchdown performance. South Dakota Mines' Jake Martinelli had quite the afternoon, however, as the redshirt senior went for five touchdowns, one interception, and 263 yards on 25 completions in 42 attempts (59.5 percent). Additionally, Walker was sacked five times while FLC got to the SDM quarterback just three times.

Orlando Westbrook-Sanchez III led all backs with 14 carries on the afternoon, but it was Holden Gilbert who led the Hardrockers ground game with two touchdowns and 101 yards on just eight carries. Guevara, who scored his first collegiate touchdown on a one-yard reception last week, continued to create an impact as the freshman from Denver, Colo., rushed for 100 yards and his second touchdown in as many weeks on just four carries.

Gaumont led all receivers in total yards, but it was Colton Grover's career performance for the Hardrockers that led all receivers in receptions with eight and touchdowns with three. Mason Galbreath and Henry Dryden each took a trip to the endzone as well.

Fort Lewis may have out-rushed South Dakota Mines 214 yards to 176, but it was a strong passing game from SDM that led FLC 308 yards to 230, aided by the Hardrockers winning the turnover battle 3-1.

Durango native Walter Stauffer led the Skyhawks defense with 8.0 total tackles including 6.0 solo, 2.0 assisted, and 4.0 tackles for 11 yards lost including 2.0 sacks for seven yards. Kalib Davis hauled in his second career interception and first of the season while also 7.0 solo tackles. Christopher Thomas Jr. also forced his first fumble on special teams. True freshman and Carlsbad, California, native Jonathan Stewart blocked a 32-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter which proved essential in sending the Skyhawks into the fourth quarter with a manageable nine-point deficit.

Hunter Newsom and Nathan Kneubuhler each supplied 6.0 tackles and a pair of sacks for the Hardrockers with Elrey Brooks III and Tyree Beasley forcing a fumble and Eli Bowman making an interception as well.
