Skyhawks felled on the road by No. 13/12 Mountaineers

Sullivan forces and recovers first career fumble

GUNNISON, Colo. – The Fort Lewis football team (1-4, 0-3 RMAC) could not find its footing Saturday night at Mojo Field in the Mountaineer Bowl at The Rady Family Sports Complex as the Skyhawks dropped a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game 44-7 to the home and No. 13-ranked Western Colorado Mountaineers (5-0, 3-0 RMAC) in front of a crowd of 1,933.

"It's frustrating. We had a game plan, had a good week of practice, and had confidence, but when we got into the game, we did not execute. [Western Colorado] is a great football team, and upfront, they won the battle tonight," head coach Johnny Cox commented. "We had some opportunities throughout the game, but we didn't take advantage of them. But like I told our guys after the game, I like the fight I saw in our guys tonight, I really do. I feel like we need to have more energy, but we didn't quit, the sideline was positive, and we just need to continue to build and move forward."

Stone Walker led the Skyhawks on a quick five-play, 43-yard march through Mountaineer territory before making a six-yard scamper into the end zone for FLC's lone touchdown of the evening. Hunter Villavicencio lined up for a 54-yard field goal try early in the second quarter, but Western Colorado's Ricky Freymond blocked the kick, the second of his career.

Josiah Roy headlined the Western Colorado offense with 291 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions on 24-of-30 (80.0 percent) passing while adding a rushing touchdown on five carries. Walker went 16-for-35 (45.7 percent) through the air for 152 yards and two interceptions. Walker took five sacks while Kabe Merhish, Jonathan Stewart, and Elijah Thorp each made a solo sack.

The Mountaineers rolled from the start for a season-high 597 yards of total offense, eclipsing 500+ yards for the second-straight week, on the back of 291 yards passing and 306 yards rushing. Royce Pao led all backs on the night with 142 yards on 21 carries while Roy and Bryce Vaz each registered rushing touchdowns. Cameron Mack was the only Skyhawk to go net-positive in the game with three yards on two attempts.

While Christopher Thomas Jr. led all receivers with 85 yards on six catches, it was Vaz who led all receivers with two touchdowns on three receptions. Josiah Ayon led all WCU wide-outs with 75 yards on six catches.

Redshirt sophomore Jacob Penney led all defenders with 13 total tackles, nine solo and four assisted, with sophomore Kalib Davis in tow with a career-high 12 total tackles featuring seven solo and five assisted. Trenton Sullivan forced and recovered a fumble while Kabe Merhish forced a fumble of his own that was recovered by the Mountaineers. Logan White led the Western Colorado defense with five tackles, while Drea Thompson and Zac Heaton both picked up interceptions.
